These two players have serious chops, and they are certainly on display here! While these guys can tear it up speed wise, you don't get the sense that they are just noodling. At the same time, the compositions are challenging for me. This is not background music, it demands attention.

Partly because of the freedom that the players feel to use dissonance, and plenty of it. The other part that makes it challenging for me is the freedom of their melodic improvisation. There are few predictable song patterns to warn me what is coming next! It reminds me of Miles Davis in that regard, when he moved into modal jazz.

The recording is good but not audiophile quality. The bass comes through with all the bottom end your system can supply, but the upper register and bow noise ... Read More

I echo the comments of previous reviewers. I am an avid Nickel Creek fan and am on the prowl for more "newgrass" music. Chris Thile's music on this album is clean and impressive - in the same style as his work with Nickel Creek, but with no vocals. Highly recommended - you won't be disappointed.

Who is a musical expert? I don't have a degree. I've just been listening to music for some 35 years now. Folk, rock, bluegrass, jazz...it doesn't take talent to listen. But I think I can hear talent, creativity, and originality by now. If I'm right about that, you folks using the word "mediocre" better look it up. "Of moderate or low quality" is really your impression of this album? Forget the material, this album is played at a level equivalent to professional symphony orchestras and Broadway pit musicians. If you've seen them, these guys stand around on stage talking about how many beats per minute they should play the next tune at.

But let's look at material here. It's not just that the influences are diverse. What is brilliant is that diverse material is brought together by a ... Read More

If you're stuck in old-time or blugrass mando playing, this CD is NOT for you. If, however, you love the mandolin and are eager to hear it explored in all its facets, this IS the recording for you. Bach, Charlie Parker, and a hornpipe thrown in for good measure. And you'll love Mike Marshall's deep-voiced mandocello playing. (I've already pulled out my instrument catalogs to check the prices on this unusual instrument.) This CD will be in my player for some time to come.
To be balanced, I have two problems. First, there's a tad too much reverb or "distance" in the sound. The liner notes say that it was recorded at a studio, but then talk about "Acoustic space enhancement" being done at some Congregational church. Does this mean that they played the recording in the church, and re-recorded ... Read More

Amazing that someone this young could compose and perform this music. The playing is first-rate and the sonics are very good. Great backing musicians. While not up to the standard set by his much later effort (Not all who wander...), it is still a very listenable album, worth many repeat plays.

Enjoy!

I'm not a prior Chris Thile fan, so I think many people were initially surprised by this release given his strong bluegrass roots, but this album is pure gold. Its a beautiful album with great vocals and excellent production value. I know Chris has said he wouldn't do this "pop" type album again, but I surely hope he changes his mind. He has excellent sense for this genre of music, and could full into the pop/alternative segment with more like this.

For those looking for something fresh and articulate in emotive lyrics and vocals buy this album!

If you know what's good for you, you'll buy this album. If you don't buy this album...well, I don't even want to think about that possibility. However bad or good your life is, listening to this music will improve it.

I love this album! Although I've been a Nickel Creek fan for years, I've only recently become acquainted with Glen Phillips and his former (sometimes current) group, Toad the Wet Sprocket. Toad was in its heyday when I was busy raising kids, so my recent discovery of Toad and Glen has been wonderful. Thus, I was absolutely delighted when I found this collaborative album. I was frankly astonished at the negative reviews, particularly complaints about the mixing, which I find baffling. I am a pretty critical listener and I find nothing wrong with the production and mixing on this album at all. The production is sparse, but that is one of the things I like about it. Glen handles the leads on the vocals, but the Nickel Creek folks add harmony in lots of places and of course are masters at their instruments on all ... Read More

When I heard the first Nickel Creek album, I was enchanted. When I heard this first Chris Thile album, I was enchanted--until I got past the first cut. Song for a Young Queen is a gem, and could make a young woman long to be loved by this guy. But the rest of the album is a collection of material got up by a promising young artist who has fallen under the unhappy and corrupting influence of the Dreaded Bela Fleck. It screams, "It doesn't matter if anyone else likes it. If I like it, it is, by definition, good." Unfortunately, Chris has implanted his Bela influence onto Nickel Creek, and they will fail as a result. They may even break up, which would be a sad thing. Bela Fleck has the capacity to remove all traces of humor and comprehensibility from the music he generates, and that resulting music is utterly self-regarding (as ... Read More
