I heard this CD on a PBS pledge drive (it was a premium) and found myself loving every cut on it! I was in my car and just wanted to keep on driving and listening. This is by far my most-played CD - I've had to make it a weekend only listen to prevent getting burned out on it. HIGHLY recommend it. Even if you are unfamiliar with some of the pieces, you will quickly learn to love them. . . . I must end this review - I'm off to listen to the "flower duet" for the 100th time. . .

I can't call myself an aficionado so take this for what it is worth. The Rachmaninoff Concerto is played during some ad (that I can't remember) and this spoils it for me. Okay so I'm a Philistine But it is a good recording and the Tchaikovsky is great. Refer to the experts (ha-ha) here for technical details. I am glad to have this recording in my library.

Hear a new revelation in sound with this SACD.

RCA originally recorded this in 1960 using 3 channels. That makes this recording nearly 50 years old. Don't let that fool you. This is an EXCEPTIONAL recording. The fidelity is remarkable. It is not flawless and the highs can have a bit of an edge. Also, crashes on the cymbal occasionally overload the left channel. But the spatial aspects of this recording defy its half century age. In the 3 channel presentation there is a presence and dimensionality too often missing in more recent recordings. There exists a soundstage that extends beyond the left and right speakers and there is a depth of sound where the instruments have height combined with front to back spatial integration creating a convincing 3D image.

Of all the recordings of Dvorak's 9th, (From the New World) this has to be the definitive version, which I reach for before any other. He shows a deep respect for the tempos which few do with this symphony. I have heard renditions which play the allegros too slow and the largo of the second movement too fast, ending up with a dull, muddy andante moderato through the entire symphony.

Solti would have none of it, and this simply has me in awe, and I would heartily recommend it for all who want to listen to this symphony. The only rendition I have found comparable is in an old LP, (and I wish somebody would release it in CD) of one of the first recordings of Leonard Bernstein, where he does a brilliant analysis of the symphony on one record, then does the symphony itself on another, and it is astonishing! ... The old LP of this recording was my introduction to the Bartok Music for Strings Percussion and Celeste when I was a kid in the 1950s. What a treat to find it again after all these years! The clarity, precision and musicality are unsurpassed by any I have heard since. It even blows away the live performances I recently enjoyed with Sir Simon Rattle conducting the Berlin as well as Esa-Peka Solonen with the LA Phil. This is a definitive performance. No question about it.
