Music : The Soul Brotherhood

This is great classic Soul-Jazz from Prestige Records in 69'. Two albums on one disc- "The Soul Brotherhood" with Charles Kynard (organ), Blue Mitchell (trumpet), David Newman (sax), Grant Green (guitar), Jimmy Lewis (bass) and Mickey Roker (drums)-this one isn't as funky as the next, but with Grant Green and Jimmy Lewis holdin' it down how can it be bad. The next one is "Reelin' with the Feelin' with Charles Kynard (of course on organ), Wilton Felder (sax), Joe Pass (guitar), Carol Kaye (bass) and Paul Humphrey (drums)- this band gets pretty funky on cuts like "Slow Burn" and "Boogalooin'". I actually checked this out because of Paul Humphrey- he's the funky drummer on Jimmy Smith's Root Down album another favorite of mine. I have a good amount of jazz in my collection and I was hesitant to ... Read More

Charles Kynard is a rather obscure organist from late sixties. He is not nearly as well known as label mates Jack McDuff, Groove Holmes or Charles Earland. This cd combines 2 lps "Afro-Disiac" and "Wa-Tu-Wa-Zui". The former features jazz guitar ace Grant Green and Houston Person on sax. The latter features Melvin Sparks on guitar and the underrated Rusty Bryant on sax. Both are prime examples of soul jazz. Cuts that stand out include "Zebra Walk" and "Wa-Tu-Wa-Zui." An excellent purchase, now if they would only reissue "The Soul Brotherhood" on cd.

This was THE album that got me into the Hammond Organ...

NEVER expected to see it reissued ! ! !

Recorded in '73, Jazz organist Charles Kynard does his take on a number of recently recorded funk tunes, circa that era... including Superstition, The World Is A Ghetto, I've Got So Much Trouble and Summer Breeze.

There's not a single miss on this album...

Featuring ultra funky soloing, funky comping, a tight rhythm section, tight crisp horn section - - funky but crisp arrangements... tightly produced... and not a tune is a miss.

Fred Wesley fans... take note of George Bohannon, the original Funky Trombonist's presence... His solo on SUPERSTITION steals the show.

Oh, introducing the band:

On this album, Charles Kynard kicks out his interpratations of some of the great soul hits of the era it was made (the year was 1972... a particularly funky one, if I may so so...) He also kicks out some originals.

Unlike many "soul Jazz" albums of the era, Kynard makes no attempt to turn the tunes into "Jazz", but rather, he takes his Jazz chops and really gets down on the funk... Other members of the band get in on it too, and while they all groove their mamma-jama's off, its really Kynard's screaming B-3 that takes the show...

The rhythm section includes: Paul Humphrey on drums, Arthur Adams on guitar, Chuck Rainey on bass- - and some pretty wicked horns... (If for some reason you don't know who's these guys are, two words: Studio Musician's musician's musician's ala ... Read More
