The set is an amazing bargain and anyone who loves Puccini and knows these artists will buy it while it's still available.

However, I feel compelled to write a brief response to the reviewer who criticized Decca for not having consistent CD data for the various CDs in this set. The record companies do not generate the tags (album name, artist, etc.) that are used by online music databases. Instead, the information is entered by a variety of independent users who employ a variety of standards or conventions when entering information about a CD. Thus, one user may enter the data for the first CD in a set, while another user enters the data for the second CD, and the two users may enter the data using different conventions. The record companies do not and cannot control the ... Read More

The sound quality is nothing like what we are used to today, even with over-compressed CDs. But the artistry of the musicians is marvelous.

Even the Gramophone, usually on Tebaldi's side no matter what, found her a bit stately and overpowering as the fragile Mimi, and the aged Serafin's conducting earned adjectives like "indulgent," and "a touch arthritic." None of these reservations are reflected in the five-star brigade at Amazon, where runaway enthusiasm trumps criticism. At the current super-bargain price from Amazon Marketplace, no one will be out of pocket trying this 1959 remake of Tebaldi's 1950 mono account under Erede -- Decca has both in print.

Listening to the two side by side, I was struck by how natural and unforced the young Tebaldi was in her vocal acting. On that account, her early Mimi combines dramatic credibility with voluptuous vocalism. By 1959 there wasn't much acting left beyond the generic: we are hearing ... Read More

This is entirely from a common listener's point of view.
The entire performance is superb. Recording re-mastering is almost flawless.
Both singers and orchestra are outstanding.
Only I think for some arias (especially by the peasants), the tempo could have been reduced a little.
But that is my preference only.
Other than that, superb!
The booklet is also very helpful.

6.Mozart: Don Giovanni from: Decca

Music : Mozart: Don Giovanni
If [...] has a staff opera reviewer they should fire him/her. This is a superb recording of the best Don Giovanni available on CD. Krips gets the max out of the Vienna Phil and Suzanne Danco is excellent, if not angelic. If you doubt it, listen to Rene Fleming's sluggish interpretation of Dona Anna in the Solti version and Danco can be appreciated for her crisp diction, delicacy, and sensitive performance. We tend to forget that a legend like Maria Callas, a contemporary of Danco's, never did Mozart, in part because Danco had mastered Le nozze di Figaro, Cosi fan tutte, and Don Giovanni and was untouchable.

If I had to name a favorite Verdi opera, it would have to
be his La forza del destino. This opera moves me like no
other among his works. I realize that some others -
Falstaff, Don Carlo, Otello - are considered to have a
greater unity between text and music. But Forza has the
strongest emotional pull. The story may be pure
opera-illogico of the soap variety, but the emotions
expressed within the dilemmas of the characters are
powerful, moving. It is among the gloomiest of Verdi's
operas, tense, brooding, morbid. Classic themes of thwarted
love and revenge. But there's also spirit, quirkiness
(Preziosilla, Melitone), and perhaps most significantly for
me, profound spirituality. The second scene in the second
act is one of the most inspired from Verdi, ... Read More

This is spectacular. But the cd "The Art of the Prima Donna" remains the definitive last word in the art of bel canto singing. Sutherland is far more fantastic in that album.
This greatest hit is a super buy. But if you want to hear what they say is the most phenomenal coloratura display ever recorded, I recommend "The Art of the Prima Donna". ...
