I saw the show in Chicago and loved it. They were selling this same CD in the lobby for $25. I'm glad I resisted and bought it on amazon instead. Great oldies with excellent sound quality.

... was my reaction to the music, a few numbers into the LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA (when they still were playing the full overture). After performing for some months on a cruise ship - and bearing in mind what is said about how you enjoy your travels even more when you remember them - that's exactly what I said to a companion: it feels like travel.

There's not much to add to the favorable words elsewhere in these pages, but a few thoughts:

Some like barbecue, some like sushi, some like both. Good thing to remember when voting for President,by the way.

I will say that my favorite scores are those that keep growing on me (WEST SIDE STORY as well as THE MUSIC MAN) - and LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA reveals something new at every listening.

Besides evoking that ... Read More

This lady has one great voice. She can certainly sell a song. My only reservation about her is that she's a bit cocky. I think she could use some humility.

"Being given the opportunity and honor to play this divine instrument was an experience that I cannot begin to put into words. This recording, Paganini: After A Dream" contains all of the emotion, excitement, hard work, obstacles, and faith that were endured to make this dream a reality. This recording is dedicated in memory of the incomparable bassist Ray Brown and my inspiring violin teacher, Gerald Beal; and to the birth of my niece, Alexandra Collette Carter." ~ Regina Carter ~

As someone who greatly appreciates violin music and the beautiful masterpieces of classical masters Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel and Gabriel Fauré, I find this recording, Regina Carter's "Paganini: After A Dream," a great source of musical enjoyment especially when shared with friends who have the same musical ... Christina Applegate is a totally endearing, multi-faceted performer, but there is no way you can forget Gwen Verdon, or to a lesser degree, Shirley MacLaine in the so-so movie. However, I love revival recordings, if only because they tend to record a more complete score, and they are technically so superior to most of the older originals. On that score, this Sweet Charity doesn't disappoint.
While Applegate is fine, Dennis O'Hare shines as Oscar. The rest of the cast are okay. Nothing more, nothing less. And as Nicki, Janine LaMama can't overcome Bebe Neuwirth in the Debbie Allen revival in the 80's. Allen also suffered the same comparison as Applegate.
One note about the score, one of Coleman's best, the song Too Many Tomorrows is beautifully done here. A gorgeous ballad, I think has been under ... Read More

I really enjoyed listening to this cd. His voice is very soothing and easy to listen to. I especially enjoy listening to "Last Morning of my Life". It includes songs made famous by others such as"Back on my Feet" and "Young Girl". I have his other cd which features music from various operas. I would say you won't be sorry that you bought this cd!!!!!!

This latest venture from David Arnold has given the "film-score-buff" a change of pace, known for his past scores of action and adventure...this one has short cues, but with counterpoints that leave you satisfied...a few stand outs ~ "JODY AND IVETTE", beautifully done..."DRIVE BY", gives the music collector their moneys worth.

Hats off to ~ Nicholas Dodd (orchestration/conductor), Shirley Caesar (vocals) and Varese Sarabande for doing what they do best...give "film-music-collectors" something to sink their teeth into!

Total Time: 41:09 on 19 Tracks ~ Varese Sarabande 302-066- 280-2 ~ (2001)

this recording can best be described as chamber music, a tribute to a couple of french artists, marguerite duras, author, and marcel duchamp, conceptual artist, in his case, his last work, etant donnes.

the piece, duras, is as much a tribute to french composer, olivier messiaen, as duras, so expect to hear bird sounds and stretches evocative of messiaen's quartet for the end of time. during the first book (premiere livre) anthony coleman on piano introduces a melody that is a variation of billy strayhorn's lush life. other personnel: mark feldman and cenovia cummins on violins, john medeski on organ, and christine bard and jim pugliese on percussion instruments.

etant donnes, 69 paroxysms for marcel duchamp, is given almost completely to the percussionists, listen for the birds, the shattering glass, ... Read More
