This really a fine recording. I bought my copy one sunny Saturday morning in Melbourne in around 1993. I saw it on the shelf and I got my wallet out. I was completely blown away by the music on this disc. Rigatti was a real discovery for me.

The use of high falsettists in the chorus and solos is particularly effective and gives us a real insight into the sounds of music in Venice in the early 17th century.

I cannot recommend this marvellous recording too highly, it is clearly one of the best made by the Gabrieli Consort, Choir & Players.

Great playing from the strings, cornetti and tromboni.

To say that this album constitutes a necessity for the classical music enthusiast would be a great big unarguable lie. It has nothing innovative to offer you as a listener, except for maybe the labelling of melodies such as "My Heart Will Go On" (that god-awful Love Theme from the gruesome film Titanic) as a worthy member of "Best Classics 100". But than again, every collection of things that does not naturally belong together, is bound to have at least one outcast where the connection clearly isn't based on anything but cost and sale-ability.

This might sound like the beginning of a CD-slaughter, or a snobbish review where only the Deutche Grammophone's recordings are meting my standards, but although I am fairly picky when it comes to musical collections, best of albums, and such horrifying ... Read More

For as great as Hyperion's recordings are of 'out of the way' music, this offering makes me wish the Hyperion producers would add some clues to where one may acquire the sheet music for these offerings, as the recordings are superb auditions for searching for new music, especially for your average Lutheran starved for something beyond the standard German, Scandanavian, and New England fare. This disc features Manuel Cardoso, Joao Lourenco Rebelo, Pedro de Cristo, and Aires Fernandez, with several pieces specifically for Maundy Thursday. These are rare treats, as a search of Amazon shows virtually nothing other than volume 1 in this series under 'Portuguese Polyphony'. You will be happy to have discovered this collection!

This recording is a reissue of a recording on The Collins label. I had reviewed it then and I have retained that text for this issue.

The human voice has often been described as the most beautiful of all instruments. This recording shows why.

I have to ask as I listen to this recording: What compelled man to compose such somber pieces? What was he thinking? Surely, he was 'touched'? Surely it wasn't for the moment. The astounding simplicity and beauty makes this recording memorable and poignant.

Gregorian Chant and choral meditations as this recording are timeless: for the ages.

Life is a short journey and this contemplative recording is as visual and powerful and perplexing as looking up at the clear night sky at the stars and pondering...evoking why?

this woman is extroidinary! there has rarely been a classical soloist that becomes the music like jennifer stinton.unlike pianist martha argerich who steals the crayons to brilliantly draw outside the lines, ms.stinton brilliantly guides the orchestra, like a current of air allowing a bird to fly. her subtlety is her strength, and her fluidity is her magic. listen to this beautifully gifted lady, and fly for yourself.
