So, I'm driving home with my girlfriend after a wonderful dinner out, and out of no where Just What I Needed comes on the radio. So I turned it up real loud and started singing along. I'm really not a very good singer but there is no way you can hear this song and not be moved to sing along with it. My girlfriend who is 15 years my junior even loved the song (but not my singing). Before we got home I said to her, "I've got to quickly throw up a review on Amazon when we get home!"

I was only 10 years old when the Cars debut album was released. I didn't actually listen to the album until two years later during my freshman year in junior high. I remember instantly falling in love with the entire album, every song. To my ears it still sounds as fresh as the day it was released. ... Read More

Since the Cars had created a perfect album with their 1978 self-titled debut, it would be nearly impossible to top it. Instead of laboring long and hard over a follow-up like many '70s bands did after a huge commercial success, the band cranked out their sophomore effort, Candy-O, almost exactly one year later from the first LP. And while the album was not as stellar as its predecessor was, it did contain several classics, resulting in another smash album that solidified the band's standing as one of the most promising new bands of the late '70s. The first single, the Top 20 anthem "Let's Go," proves to be the best track, but plenty of other standouts can be found as well. The title track remains one of the band's best rockers, while the gentle "It's All I Can Do" also deserved to be a hit. The band ... Read More

Classic Cars, pun intended. The only song I didn't care for was Heart Break City, all the other the songs are fantastic. You won't go wrong buying this one. Highly recomended.

At the time of Panorama's release it was deemed difficult, awkward and overly-arty. Time has proven that these things were not such bad things for The Cars. Given the somewhat agreeable one-two punch of the two stellar albums that preceded (the frighteningly good debut and just-as-good-and-still-growing 'Candy-O') it may have confused a segment of The Cars' audience. The Cars were always huge fans of and always employed the technological developments in pop music (i.e. drummer David Robinson's sole use of electronic drums by the time of Heartbeat City and keyboardist Greg Hawkes's wide variety of the then-current sounds). For the most part the songs themselves never suffered too much as a result. There are a few sparingly dated sounds here and there but these have since been embraced by the electronica set. However ... Read More

The Cars' Heartbeat City is indeed the sound of the Summer of 1984. And unfortunately many, many individual sounds on the album stayed there as well as they were almost dated by the end of that very Summer. The Cars constant employment of that weeks' sound gave much of the material on this album in particular a somewhat limited shelf-life. As so many synth sounds from this era didn't sound too amazing in the first place, it's pretty understandable that they didn't age too well. Which is a shame as the songs themselves are fully-formed and full of life with pretty good arrangements. I've constantly wondered what exactly what David Robinson's (now a businessman) thought process was and how could he possibly think that his drum sound was improving with each successive album by solely using electronic drums (on albums and ... OK I picked up this album because it was supposed to be the new Blink.
Well its more hardcore punk. Some of the songs I really, really dont like. A few were actually good, but most were just ok. If i had previewed the cd first I most likely wouldn't have bought it.

Shake It Up is a fantastic album. Although I didn't realize this upon first listen, a few listens later I understood this album to be exceptional. It incorporates more synthesizer parts than before but the arrangements are good, and every guitar, synth and vocal line is purposeful and concise. David Robinson also regrettably started using a lot of synthesized drums in addition to his standard drum kit which in time began to date even the Cars best songs. But the songs on Shake It Up are thankfully untouched by such horribly dated sounds.

"Since You're Gone" is one of Ric Ocasek's finest songs, the lightly psychedelic "Victim Of Love" and the fun, mindlessly-catchy throw-away title track are some of the best singles of 81/82. "Cruiser" is a fine straight-ahead rocker and "This Could Be Love" is melodically twitchy. ... Read More

Released in 1995, this is the ultimate way of acquiring (almost) all the band's biggest hits plus a pile of underrated album cuts. The Cars is probably one of the most influential bands of the late 70's new wave movement. All the band's six albums are represented and they are: the self-titled debut "The Cars" (1978), "Candy-O" (1979), "Panorama" (1980), "Shake It Up" (1981), "Heartbeat City" (1984), and "Door To Door" (1987). In addition to album songs, you also get quite a few rare demos and outtakes too! The line-up never changed throughout the years and it featured Rick Ocasek on rhythm guitar/vocals, Elliot Easton on lead guitar, Greg Hawkes on keyboards, Benjamin Orr on bass/vocals, and David Robinson on drums.

From their debut, one of the best is the first one "Just What I Needed", it may be their most popular ... Read More

Back in 1996, Rhino Records had plans for a Cars rarities disc entitled Prototypes, which was to include their entire first album in demo form, as well as other rarities from all eras of the band. And even though Ice magazine ran a story on it and a track listing was set, the album never saw the light of day for reasons unknown. Three years later, Rhino reconsidered (helped by a fan write-in campaign), and issued a similarly assembled package, The Cars: Deluxe Edition. A two-CD set, it contains their classic 1978 self-titled debut in its entirety (an album you just can't hear enough), while the second disc presents the complete album in demo form, with an additional five early demos of previously unreleased compositions tacked on at the end. Diehard fans will have a feast with disc two, the demos for such radio standards as "My Best ... Read More
