Mystere' was my first Circque Du Soleil experience. One I will never forget. This companion CD is perfect for those who had no time to find a little program or something to bring home from the show. I was amazed and taken by the fact that the music was so beautiful. Here is is in it's LIVE form as beautiful as the day I saw the show.

From what I hear this live cd is better than the studio cd also available for purchase. I never heard the studio cd so I don't know. I can say that Live CDs normally are lesser quality but, this disc goes above and beyond to produce one of the best sounding live CDs that continues to enchant me each time I listen to it.

Thank you Cirque Du Soleil!

Andrew Parrott conducts the Taverner Consort and Players is a very affordable set of discs that allow everyone to experience the 'non-choral' choral Bach. Instead of the usual chorus (even the pared down choruses of 16 - 30 members the way most 'authentic' performances use) the works are assigned to one person per part. The result is light, airy, transparent, and very lovely Bach.

Case in point: for the Magnificat 'for 5 voices, 5-part chorus, orchestra & continuo' in D major, Parrott conducts or rather inspires Emily van Evera, Evelyn Tubb, Taverner Consort and Players, Howard Crook, Caroline Trevor, Simon Grant in a new way to hear this gracious work. That Bach can be interpreted in so many ways gives credence to his importance in musical history. This performance, as pure ... Read More

This CD has a mixture of pieces that would have been performed in a domestic setting, from secular/devotional songs to verse anthems, virginal music and viol consort. Many of the vocal pieces are found in Byrd's "Songs of Sundry Natures." I particularly enjoyed the verse anthems 'Have Mercy Upon Me, O God' and especially 'Christ Rising Again' which is probably the finest recording of that well-known anthem that I've ever heard. Red Byrd captures the domestic nature of these pieces, which is nothing like the typical ethereal cathedral boy soprano/Tallis Scholars type of performance that you would normally hear. They have a very earthy sound and the viol consort plays quite energetically. I also am a big fan of historical pronunciation which they use. And of course I can never get enough of Caroline Trevor's ... Read More

Music : Beethoven: Piano Concerto 5 & Choral Fantasy (EMI)
Melvyn Tan and the London Classical Players directed by Roger Norrington completed their Beethoven cycle (the nine symphonies and the piano concertos) in January 1989 with this polished performance of the composer's grand 'Emperor' Concerto coupled with a fairly rare recording of the Fantasia in C major, Op. 80, a work which, according to the liner notes, has only survived because it is by Beethoven, but which Norrington and his team seem determined to bring to the forefront by means of an explosive performance that leaves, for my mind at any rate, nothing to be desired.

As with the other Beethoven recordings, the tempi are comparatively fast; Stefan Vladar and the Capella Istropolitana on Naxos need, for example, nearly two and a half minutes more for the Adagio un poco mosso (which on their recording ... Read More

I just listened to this compilation for the first time, expecting to hear another re-hashing of these beloved tunes done by a fine ensemble (and completely devoid of character!). However, this is not the typical domesticated Men and Boys rendetion you might be accustomed to.

Red Byrd utilizes not only pronunciation appropriate to the period, but sings these pieces in a manner more like shaped note American tunes. It is, at first, a bit off-putting. However if one bears with it the pieces spring to life in a new way. In no piece is this more striking than "This is the Record of John". The rendetion heard here of the solo line becomes less pious and righteous, and a bit more tongue in cheek with John's repeated "no" answer to the questions asked of him by the Temple elders.

A must! I know ... Read More

When I purchased this 5-disc set by Andrew Parrot, I had failed to notice that this recording is at the minimum-setting of Bach recordings. No choir, but one individual voice per vocal part. Now normally, I like a nice big full choir sound, so before listening I had some doubts as to this recording would appeal to me.
Well, I must say, now that I've listened to it a couple of times, it's really a wonderfully pure effect, and I really DO like it. The sound isn't bleak at all, and at times the four interacting voices do sound like a small choir. I really do not know what Bach's original intentions were, but this recording is really a joy to listen to, and that's what counts most for me.

The other reviewers give a far better appreciation of the technical merits of the Tallis Scholars' interpretation and other fine points of this recording. Speaking as the peripetatic (sic) amateur who pokes his nose into some of the dustier corners of world music, I find this an excellent find off the beaten trail. It is richer than the medieval plainchant and purer, and more inspiring than the more elaborate baroque and classical works. A very decent find for the roaming listener.
