Maybe these don't represent absolutely the greatest duets in all opera. But they represent some awfully good ones! The CD begins with a duet from "Les Pecheurs des Perles" (Puccini) and ends with the gloomy Miserere (from "Il Trovatore," by Verdi). In between are many more operas, from Donizetti and Mozart to Strauss and Wagner. Some of the finer singers of the past half century appear in various of these duets. A bit more detail on a handful of these to illustrate. "Sull'aria" from Mozart's "Le Nozze di Figaro." Heather Harper and Judith Blegen sing the parts here. This is a sweet duet from the opera. What beautiful music. I'm new to opera, but the tracks on this CD are awesome. My only complaint is that Nessun Dorma is the last tract...so I start out there first.

This film was destined to become a classic when it was first released, not only due to the actors who perform in it but also based upon the story content as well. It's a "feel good" movie recreating the times of our lives that either took place or were discussed around the family table. It rightly takes its place beside classic films featuring both Hepburns, Tracy, Bogie, Bacall, Stewart, etc. I had previous owned it on VHS but not DVD and missed being able to watch it occasionally so I decided it was time to acquire it again. Most enjoyable!

I don't know opera. Last summer we had an incredible 20th anniversary trip to Italy. As a side trip from Venice, we planned a night in Verona. Neither my wife or I had been to an opera. Is this how its supposed to be... ...an incredible star filled night with a three quarter moon, the largest stage and outdoor theatrical production on the planet, all taking place in a roman colleseum (arena) built in 180 a.d., an incredible colorful set and production with a full symphony orchestra and voices that don't come easy. Aida. Now I know what all the hpye is as you opera fans sure are lucky to have such a beautiful setting for all your productions. Okay, we got spoiled. But I also found myself getting spoiled on the Italian composer Verdi. Read More

My mother, who never saw an opera in her life, had the London LP "Highlights" version of this performance. Each time she played it, she cried unashamedly. I have seen 4 Butterfly's performed live. None matches this recording for its sheer power. Brava, Renata, brava.

Excellent opera selections. Good range of different operas. The singers themselves are well known. Highly recommended to anyone getting into classical music.

This CD will make an opera lover out of anyone. It features the great arias--all of which have been featured in movies. So many of these tunes are familiar but when they are heard with the great opera stars like Maria Callas, Kiri Te Kanawa, Pavorotti, etc. they are truly moving and very easy to listen to. I'm a rock and roller, but I find myself listening to this CD over and over.

The set is an amazing bargain and anyone who loves Puccini and knows these artists will buy it while it's still available. However, I feel compelled to write a brief response to the reviewer who criticized Decca for not having consistent CD data for the various CDs in this set. The record companies do not generate the tags (album name, artist, etc.) that are used by online music databases. Instead, the information is entered by a variety of independent users who employ a variety of standards or conventions when entering information about a CD. Thus, one user may enter the data for the first CD in a set, while another user enters the data for the second CD, and the two users may enter the data using different conventions.
