Christmas has come a bit early to my little apartment. Tonight I purchased The John Rutter Christmas Album. I'm listening to it on my laptop right now... How amazing, delicate and worshipful this music is. Exquisite voices, perfectly balanced and harmonized by Rutter's arrangements. There are so many favorites on this album. One delight is the Donkey Carol. It is written in an unever 5/8 time, so you have the feeling of being carried on a clumsy donkey! Another is I Saw Three Ships. Very light and happy, with a key change that is like the opening of a flower. How Rutter does it, I can only marvel. "And he did whistle, and she did sing on Christmas Day in the morning!" How can I say this - if you have absolutely zero Christmas cds and want to build a nice collection, this is the one you should buy first. From the robust and cheery "Good Christian Men Rejoice" in the opening track til the end this disc is full of wonderful arrangements, a few esoteric picks, and all around good Christmas cheer. Whether you are sitting at home and want to feel the Christmas spirit and yet want to have more musical substance than the local radio station, or hosting a party that needs a nice soundtrack, this cd will satisfy your needs.

Absolutely beautiful selections performed perfectly!! I play it almost daily and repeatedly. I am familiar with several pieces from a performance perspective and enjoy the entire collection immensely.

I got this recording on tape many years ago. I have been gradually replacing my old vinyl and tape recordings with CDs. This year I got this CD and I am happy that I did. As usual, Amazon's price cannot be beaten. I am a huge fan of John Rutter and his Christmas choral music. If you are, too, then you will not regret adding this CD to our collection.

After hearing this piece of work on two different occasions on the same day, I felt that I needed to have it. All the choices always make it difficult to choose, so I ended up buying this version. I am utterly amazed with this beautiful piece of music, by its the performers and just the cd in general.

I have NOT received the cd yet. I has been a wonderful while, and although I sent an email to the seller asking for it, my request seemed to have fallen on deaf ears. What else am I supposed to do??

These yuletide favorites have a lot going for them. The title song is a rendition of "I saw 3 ships" that is great. I like John Rutter's version of this carol much, much more than the "traditional" one you always hear each holiday season. Also, who cannot melt over the beautiful "Mary's Lullaby"? That one makes me cry each time I hear it. I will probably buy the sheet music version if I can find it. It would be a great one to perform as a musical number in church during the holidays. I also enjoy their rendition of "Go Tell it on the Mountain". It is well done, not quite the way Americans are used to hearing it, but done with style, grace and great musicality. This album has lots of gems. I believe it is out of print, which is very, very sad.

This disc is a bit different from many of the Cambridge Singers' discs in that it is exclusively secular songs. They have retained one of their favourite recording spaces, the Lady Chapel at Ely Cathedral, a structure well atuned to a capella singing (it has a natural nine second delay in the cathedral). This recording was John Rutter's first album on American Gramaphone Records. --Music-- Madrigals are songs that have various purposes. They can be for private or public entertainment; they can be together with dramatic performances or played on their own. Petrarch is the inspiration of many madrigal texts, and folk songs also feature significantly.
