I heard this CD on a PBS pledge drive (it was a premium) and found myself loving every cut on it! I was in my car and just wanted to keep on driving and listening. This is by far my most-played CD - I've had to make it a weekend only listen to prevent getting burned out on it. HIGHLY recommend it. Even if you are unfamiliar with some of the pieces, you will quickly learn to love them. . . . I must end this review - I'm off to listen to the "flower duet" for the 100th time. . .

Let me start by saying that I am not LDS, and never will be, but the performances of The Mormon Tabernacle Choir are in a class by themselves. No one, or no group can come close the the magnificent standard that they have set. This CD is appropriately named: "The Wonder of Christmas", because it is a wonder. It will be a loving part of every Christmas to come.

Sissel's voice is transcendent. So pure and lovely and easy to listen to. Her choice of music is out of this world. I can listen to it every day and not get tired of it.

I have more experience with other genres of music, but am interested in basically all kinds. I have been collecting CDs for nearly 2 decades but had no Opera in my collection. I did a little research and arrived at a conclusion. If I wanted the most and best Opera music for my money, I had to get this title, which is a double album, and "The Most Famous Opera Duets". Well, the latter was a steal with a list price under four dollars, and the former was a truly good compilation of many uplifting, diverse, impactful, and pleasant pieces. I am satisfied with my purchases and have filled the gap in my music collection. I can't see Opera getting better than this and the other title I mentioned. Enjoy!

This is my personal favorite rendition of Beethoven's work, although it's only a small sample. The approach taken on some numbers by the conductor and performers are quite moving, and for me personally it inspired emotions I haven't found in other versions of the same music. This soundtrack made me love Beethoven, it was my first real exposure to his music. Since then I've listened to more complete collections, but personally I never yet felt like they played the excerpts here with the same feeling.

My only complaint is that the CD is too quiet. Some sections I can barely hear when I listen in my car. Maybe I just don't have a trained ear. It would be great on headphones, but even still the overall volume is much less than most music CDs. There's no way I could listen to it ... Read More

Bryn Terfel, one of the best baritones in the world, has produced a great recording for the listening public. We can always expect him to offer rich tone, articulate phrasing, and dynamic, intelligent interpretations in his recitals, and that's exactly what we get here. Terfel once said "Having been born Welsh does not necessarily mean being the son of a good home, but it does mean having singing in the fibers of your heart." Well, Terfel certainly does anyway, and he pays tribute to his beloved homeland Wales with a lineup of Welsh folk songs. The Welsh National Anthem, of which there are two versions on this CD, is at least as rousing as "The Star-Spangled Banner" (blasphemy, I know), and is worth listening to over and over. To boot, it's sung in Welsh Gaelic, a beautiful language. Another highlight ... Read More

Something truly remarkable is happening; we're finally getting the kinds of recordings and performances of Berlioz that have been needed for years. This isn't a matter of a "new take" with Brahms or Beethoven, as we see often enough, this is a manifestation of a growing understanding of this incredibly misunderstood composer. Younger conductors are hearing the avant-garde qualities of the music and unapologetic-ally bringing out the extraordinary details. We're accepting that Berlioz knew exactly what he was doing. In a marvelous way one had to be brought through the experimentation of the last century in order to finally "get" him. Recording technology has also, and finally, reached Berliozian standards. It's as if he had been composing for us, not for his own time.

The still-brilliant, incredibly ... Read More

This CD is an excellent addition to anybody's musical collection. It reflects the popular famous music from TV commercials as well as other music not as well known, but equally as entertaining. All the music reflects Jenkins' ability to vary his style of music.
I have listened to this music many times.

This collection contains just about every major well known Baroque piece ever used for a wedding, graduation or ultimate Baroque 'starter kit'.Vocalists such as the Welsh Baritone Bryn Terfel, the late great Pavarotti, the world's foremost oboist of the '70 and '80is Heinz Holliger and Orchestras such as Saint Martin-in-the-Fields and I Musici are assembled with defining renditions of these great favorites. There are two tracks of particular interest that is of great delight:the little recorded "Le Coucou" by Jean Daquin as performed by harpsichord virtuoso Trevor Pinnock.Pinnock wisely has chosen a "stopped" sound for his performance instead of full sound and it is a delight to the ears;another unusual delight was to hear the choral "Zadok the Priest" from Handel's "Coronation Anthems", a most majestic rendering from The Westminster ...
