Perhaps it is the romantic in me that enervates a sense of anticipation when superlative musicians take up period instruments to play great master's works in the manner in which they were written. In this case I believe that also means enjoying the work with a slightly faster Tempi than accustomed. Beautiful music making for beautiful space.

I haven't heard this performance. I've just ordered it because of the positive ratings and recommendations it's gotten. BUT... I wanted to grab a little preview from the MP3 samples, and what do I find but another amazon snafu. The MP3 takes you directly to the CD of the Robert Shaw Chorale, hardly likely to be of comparable merit.

I don't feel particularly qualified to comment on anyone's musicianship. However, I can tell the difference between an instrument well played and, well, the opposite. Love Ma's playing, and this is a nice representation of his repertoire.

As an 18 year old univeristy student i would have to rate "The Only Classical Cd You'll Ever Need" as excellent. I dont know much about classical music but i was able to recognize almost every song and able to appreciate the music. Classical music is excellent to study to when i am up late for an exam and amazing to calm down to will i am simply resting. For anyone who has never been interested in classical music i would recomend this CD as a great start to an appreciation for an amazing genre of music.

THe Bach Brandenburg #2 (William Buckley's Firing Line Theme)is the one that was used on the show. Wonderful interpretation and playing.

Many, many aeons ago I participated in the chorus of a University production of Mozart's REQUIEM. One of my friends (who was in the audience) said to me after the performance, "I've never seen you look so happy." I was...and who wouldn't be? Participating in a classical chorus always creates an immediate sense of community--even if limited to the run of the show. Participating in a Mozart work--and particularly his REQUIEM--rates as a very special experience. Every once in awhile I run across an album that excells, not because of the shining brilliance of one artist, but because of the collective impact of several. Here, in this album, are some little-known gems from Christmas music literature. I was captivated by the lilting and primitive joy in "Jesus, the Light of the World," which I had never heard before. Then there is Chanticleer and its rendition of Charles Ives' "Christmas Carol," a classic too little known. There are others. If you look for unique renditions of familiar and unfamiliar Christmas music to enhance the joy of the season, this album is a must-buy.

I provide music for water aerobics classes. The class members are typically retirees, and like Classical music, yet until this CD the only Classical music with a beat distinctive and steady enough for water aerobics that I'd found was on the "Hooked on Classics" series. Thus, for water aerobics, this is a find. Also contributing to this CD's popularity for water aerobics are that: (1) many of the songs are upbeat, and (2) "new stereo" recordings (in contrast to my recordings of Sousa marches that were played by Sousa himself; he died in the 1930s.) In Summary, were you to buy just ten CDs for water aerobics classes, this would be one of them.
