1.Wagner: The Great Operas from the Bayreuth Festival from: Decca

Music : Wagner: The Great Operas from the Bayreuth Festival
There's not really a lot to say about a package containing all post-Rienzi operas from Bayreuth at less than $2/disc. I can't seriously imagine anyone being disappointed by this set: cast after cast of superb singers, conductors -- all bathed in that glorious Bayreuth sound. Some might argue over one performance vs. others, but there are no disappointments here. Decca deserves congratulations for making this available.

This is without doubt the best Turandot on disc. Nilsson's voice is more "free" compared to the RCA version but this might be a question of recording techniques. The three main parts work perfect together, they can not be bettered on disc. So - this is THE choice. To my very great astonishment EMI has chosen the recording with Maria Callas to their "Great recordings of the Century" series, not the one reviewed here. Callas sang the role a little more than 20 times just in the beginning of her career and she did not like it, she was afraid that it could destroy her voice, therefore she dropped it as soon as possible. Turandot was Nilsson's most sung role: over 300 times.
In one of his biographies Placido Domingo tells about singing in Turandot together with Nilsson at the Verona Arena. He ... Read More

There's no other way to put it. Beside Cooke's landmark musical analysis, all other examinations of Wagner's Ring Cycle shrink to insignificance. This work is absolutely vital to anyone who'd genuinely grasp the unique musical language of this greatest of operatic masterpieces. Before Cooke, musical commentary was limited to pitiful motif lists. Analysts seem to have quite ignored Wagner's own belief the musical language of his vast tetralogy evolves organically. Cooke is the first to grasp and investigate this concept and, to this day, the only one to fathom it in so complete a manner. He presents his brilliant discoveries with succinct easily-grasped verbal explanations illustrated by sonic examples either from the great Solti recording, or created specially for this analysis, an unmistakable gauge of how ... I bought this CD as a birthday present for my father and haven't actually heard the content myself. But because I ordered it, Amazon have prompted me to write a review. Certainly the feedback I'm getting is excellent and my Dad has derived hours of listening pleasure from it.

Ideally, I'd have given this recording 4.5 stars (the thing that bothers me is Marie Collier's howling and crying as Chrysothemis: much as it is indeed called-for in the score, it seems overdone...); since that's not available, let it have the full 5 as it otherwise deserves it. This is particularly so given its presenting the full uncut musical text of the opera (apparently all the other recordings, with the possible exception of the Sawallisch, have the same 6-7 cuts that are usually made with staged performances); in any case, the performances (particularly those of Solti and the Wiener Philharmoniker, as well as of Nilsson and Krause - what power!!!) make this recording an absolute must in any serious classical music collection - especially with any Straussians! People, do your best to get this recording ... Read More

I started out with the Levine/Met dvd of this opera/cycle. As most reviewers know, that dvd tends to make the more subtle, quiet portions of the Ring seem endless (just check out the Die Walkure portion). I can't knock that dvd collection too much, because it at least gave me an idea of a more traditional Ring, and hey, the Das Rheingold part of the cycle was often very good (LOVE Christa Ludwig's Fricka! Timeless!).

Because of my being advised by knowledgeable Wagnerites that I had mostly been cheated out of a more dynamic Ring recording, I began collecting the Solti-conducted version, buying one part of the cycle a month. I felt that this was the best way to fully absorb the operas; Das Rheingold one month, Die Walkure the next, etc. This approach worked where the Levine dvd ultimately failed: I was able ... "The Bell Telephone Hour" ran from 1959 through 1968. I remember watching many of the programs in that time. A number of these featured operatic performance, some of which are captured on this DVD. As a result, this work is a nice historical time capsule of some of the best singers of that era. As a side note, it is interesting to observe that this was one of the first TV programs to feature color.

Here follow some exemplar cuts:

Renata Tebaldi sings "Un Bel Di," from Puccini's "Madame Butterfly." What a lush voice! This is one of the great sopranos of the 20th century. Clothed in appropriate garb, she does considerable justice to this aria. She also demonstrates a compelling portrait of her character.

Robert Merrill, the wonderful baritone, takes on "Largo al Factotum" from Rossini's "Il Barbiere ... Read More

Much as I revere Wagner generally and this great work in particular, I am not the Complete Wagnerite. I do not seek any hypothetically `perfect' Tristan, but this is not just for the obvious reason that in such a long music drama it would be unlikely that my ideas and those of any imaginable performers would coincide totally. It is largely because I have long suspected that Furtwaengler's great recording from the 1950's was going to be as near to my idea of perfection as I was ever likely to come. However the interpretation of Tristan did not stop for all time with Furtwaengler. For advice on newer versions I consulted

Doctor and Sage, and heard much Argument
About it and about.

What I found, and what you will find if you carry out the same exercise, is that there is next to no consensus among the Wagner cultists. Unless ... Read More
