Maybe these don't represent absolutely the greatest duets in all opera. But they represent some awfully good ones! The CD begins with a duet from "Les Pecheurs des Perles" (Puccini) and ends with the gloomy Miserere (from "Il Trovatore," by Verdi). In between are many more operas, from Donizetti and Mozart to Strauss and Wagner. Some of the finer singers of the past half century appear in various of these duets.

A bit more detail on a handful of these to illustrate.

"Sull'aria" from Mozart's "Le Nozze di Figaro." Heather Harper and Judith Blegen sing the parts here. This is a sweet duet from the opera. The singer's voices meld well together and this represents a poignantly sung piece.

"Ah! Verrana a tell sull'aure," from Donizetti's "Lucia di Lammermoor." ... Read More

The conductor and the singers can make a beautiful song the opera that everyone jeers and hates. To have a Russian singer doing o mio babbino caro is just plain silly...give the woman a break and play something from Russian opera...give a beautiful melodic aria to a lyrical singer like Caballe...boo hiss. Try Opera's Greatest Moments where they give Hvorostvsky an aria from Pique Dame and leave the bel canto to bel canto singers.

I ordered this DVD because Artur Rubenstein was one of my favorite pianists. Also, I wanted to play it for my piano class of students. It did not disappoint, it was excellent. It even included an interview, which was a nice surprise.

Personally, I am not enough of a music wizard to be able to compare this CD with others producing the same concertos. It's beautiful, I hear no flaws, it sweeps me away.

I have always regretted the way London/Decca rearranged the Haitink performances: the original pairing of this performance of the 9th was with an equally fine performance of the 1st (now paired with the intermittently interesting but ultimately unsuccessful 3rd). The performances of both symphonies on the original disc capture the mix of light and dark, playfulness and tragedy, lyricism and satire. It is unfortunate, that the current disc pairs an exemplary recording of the witty 9th with Haitink's beautifully played yet drab and soulless account of the 5th. Try to find the earlier disc.

I don't know opera.

Last summer we had an incredible 20th anniversary trip to Italy. As a side trip from Venice, we planned a night in Verona. Neither my wife or I had been to an opera.

Is this how its supposed to be...

...an incredible star filled night with a three quarter moon, the largest stage and outdoor theatrical production on the planet, all taking place in a roman colleseum (arena) built in 180 a.d., an incredible colorful set and production with a full symphony orchestra and voices that don't come easy. Aida.

Now I know what all the hpye is as you opera fans sure are lucky to have such a beautiful setting for all your productions.

Okay, we got spoiled. But I also found myself getting spoiled on the Italian composer Verdi.

For me, this set ... Read More

I'm not opera literate, so I was looking for some kind of introduction that had some familiar arias and that would connect me to others that I had not heard. I liked that the notes with the cd indicated where a new listener may have heard some of the music (in a commercial, during an important scene in a movie, etc). This was the source of a lot of 'Ah ha!' moments. It even inspired me to rent a dvd of a live version of Turandot and to put others on my Netflix queue. I owe my newly aroused curiosity about opera, believe it or not, to Il Divo. I had to know what these guys sing when they're not reinterpreting pop songs. I'm glad I started this journey and this cd was a good start.

Haitink's Shostakovich has never been Russian in style. His pioneering symphony cycle on Decca in the 80s established a point of view that eschewed social realism, people's heroics, intense personal suffering -- in short, all political and biographical overtones. Critics split over whether he was wrong to tame the composer's instense struggle and conflict; they will have the same complaint here. But as pure music this new Sym. #4 is phenomenal. My benchmark for the work has been Gergiev and the Kirov Orch. (Philips), but the CSO's blazing virtuosity easily outdoes them. The sheer beauty of the playing sets a new standard.

In addition, we have demonstration-quality sonics from the orchestra's house label (I listened in two-channel stereo) that captures both detail and power. Haitink's great strength as an interpreter ... Read More

i went searching for a Beethoven CD because i was lucky enough to find this wonderful Mozart one. But this Beethoven CD doesnt have the best performances. The most popular pieces are apparently played by beginners because the notes sound disjointed, as if they arent playing together but playing each piece separately, which is not what an orchestra is supposed to sound like....otherwise we wouldnt call it an orchestra....it would be an elementary school meddley! But anyway, the less popular pieces are boring, like the compilers didnt feel like paying for the good stuff. Overall, im disappointed with this CD. The picture is cool though.....(insert glaring smiley here).
