I was very impressed when I heard this CD. I really could not believe that the Berlin Phil. sounded so solid. The brass play consistently throughout and they actually sound like the CSO at times. The strings/woodwinds are well balanced, lush, and simply play extremely well. These symphonies are among the best I've ever heard, technically, that is, of course everyone has different tastes in interpretations, but for me, this one does it. I'm very happy that throughout the album, all 3 symphonies are played consistently and with a solidity that amazes me. As a musician, one always looks forward, first, to a solid performance, then can one enjoy it. I was disappointed by the quality of the recording. Many sections of the orchestra sounded muddy and indistinct, particularly the strings; while the brass sounded harsh.

I had the pleasure of hearing Mstislav's playing of Tchaikovsky's "Rococo variations" on NYC's WQXR. Truth be told I was late for a meeting because I had to stay in my car listening to Mstislav's playing; and I have no regrets! I listened to Rococo repeatedly before I turned to Dvorak's "Cello concerto", and SLAM DUNK! WOW!!! The disk has not been taken out of my CD player since...

There is a good reason why this recording can be had new for seven dollars and change while the Bruno Walter reissue costs sixty bucks. This Triple is just plain awful. Neither Corigliano, Rose nor Hendl have one tenth the stature of the giants on this recording but guess what? They know how to play together. And HvK? He has no clue.

Torcon 3, the 61st World Science Fiction Convention in Toronto in 2003, asked its members to rate the top science-fiction films of the 20th Century. "2001: A Space Odyssey" came out on top. This CD, which contains snippets of dialog as well as the music from the soundtrack, helps the film come alive again. People used to think of the Blue Danube Waltz as being old-fashioned and stodgy, conjuring up images of ballroom gowns and cavalry uniforms of Old Vienna. Never again. After "2001", it'll always be the perfect music for spaceship docking.

It is enjoyably performed and first rate sounding set! I much prefer it over Karajan any time. The music is respectfully treated and gratefully performed. EMI's quality shines as always. You also may like this Beethoven Symphonies 1,2,3,4,5,6 and Art Galleries of the Time, 2DVDs+3CDs Ultimate MosaicDVD Collection I also have Toscanini's classical rendition of the same symphonies which are superb but unfortunately the CDs that I received have audible hiss.

Buying this album was a pure accident, and I thank my lucky stars that I did! this recording is absolutely brilliant. I had played Mendelssohn before in Symphony, but I had never heard these particular compositions and they have made him one of my favorite composer! I love it!
