This publication is one of the few that you need with almost everything going on to the web these days. For those interested in the five string banjo it is a must for keeping up with the pickers and the new literature for the five string. It is the only print publication I subscribe to.

As an amateur flutist, I love reading this magazine. It keeps me up to date with what's going on in the flute world.

54.American Cinematographer from: Amer Soc of Cinematographer

Magazines : American Cinematographer

American Cinematographer can work for you or against you. I started a five year relationship that has recently ended. At the time about to attend film school, I needed all the help I could get to always be one-step ahead of everyone else.

The magazine did wonders. I knew more than the professors. Cinematography is a craft that should be practiced as well as read, of course, so my knowledge never reflected what I could actually do behind the lens. Reading specific articles while following along with a DVD copy of the article's movie is a wonderful exercise. The photographs in the magazine never quite live up to par with the real deal. If I wasn't concerned with spoilers, I wouldd read AC, then skip over to the theater and watch the results play out on film.

This magazine is the primier publication for the audio industry. Very few ads, lots of articles. Mostly you will find articles about people, movers and shakers in the music industry. Fun to hear how they did it in the good ole days. Still a lot of eductation between the covers of each issue.

I recently subscribed to JazzTimes. I had visited their website regularly, and I decided to receive the hard copy magazine. I like their mix of coverage of the established stars and the up-and-comers. They have some great contributors (Nat Hentoff, Gary Giddins). I like their wide-ranging disc review section. There is so little Jazz on the radio now - we need to find the new Jazz grooves through the Internet and magazines like JazzTimes.

59.Decibel from: Red Flag Media Inc

Magazines : Decibel

This is my favorite magazine right now. This is the magazine that I always get excited about when it comes in the mail. Decibel is obviously written by people who are big music fans in general, but love extreme metal music. These are the people who can see a lot of music journalists for the wankers they are and that bands like Slayer, Carcass, Jesu, and Converge deserve as much, if not more respect than popular bands like Talking Heads, Nirvana, and Radiohead.

One of the best things about this magazine is how it covers all genres and eras. They'll do a profile of some obscure grindcore or doom metal band or a band that is just doing something entirely new. And they do cover stories on popular older bands like Iron Maiden, but then they'll do a cover story on bands that might not be that popular, but are ... Read More
