I started reading the Vibe magazine back in late '02/ early '03 (which ever issue that had Snoop Dogg's Paid Tha Cost to Be Da Boss as their featured review and gave it a 3.5). Since then Vibe magazine has been one of the three magazines that I consult before I buy an album (the other two were The Source and the XXL). Vibe magazine is good when you want to know whats on your favorite artist's mind for the most part. What I seem to notice is that they interview the same artists over and over again and never have any substance to show for it.

What really pains me is their review section. Just about a year ago, they stopped giving out ratings on albums (at one point they are records and then became, what I call, "V-Stamps"...sort of like Mics from The Source). Why, I don't know. (It ... Read More

When I was a teenager and in my early twenties, the monthly AP was a prized gift in my mailbox. Since I've hit my 30's it has lost touch with me and I feel my generation. It does focus on new and upcoming bands and goes a little heavy on the whole "style" thing. Nothing really to interesting unless your a teenager or in your 20's and hanging onto something. The one and only reason I'm giving it four stars is the fact that the reviews are honest and a gazillion times better than Rolling Stone or Spin. Though given that Spin and Paste are now my music magazines of choice. I will no longer purchase an AP just read the reviews while I'm at the newsstand.

If you decide some magazine is lame, don't you just ignore the renewal notice and they'll stop sending it when your subscription runs out? Not so these guys. No, I get a letter from a "collection agency." A collection agency? You're kidding me. Just cancel the renewal and cut the strong arming. But no, this magazine's loser sales department seems to intend to intimidate young readers into resubscribing through these "threatening" renewal notices. Uncool. That deserves a flunking grade. Oh, and did I mention the 'zine is lame?

Opera News is a magazine dedicated to opera and the individual talents that contribute to the full opera production. This magazine offers a way to find out dates for upcoming operas; backgrounds on some of the more popular opera stars; reviews of operas and opera related media; interviews; etc.

I am not a man of the arts by any stretch and it's a rare day that finds me sitting in a theater seat, watching a bunch of stage performers sing and dance. But I still like Opera News nonetheless and I can understand fully why fans of opera enjoy it so much. It covers the big operas, the big stars, and much more.

Articles about specific performers are common in this magazine but Opera News isn't just a magazine about opera performers and the long hours they labor for their chosen ... Read More

This magazine is fun to read, kind of like admiring expensive watches. And I would love to be able to afford some of the equipment they cover. But when a reviewer gets all excited about a $2100 power cord ("has an effortless musicality and imparts the body and soul of complex acoustic environments with almost erie palpability"), it's hard to take them seriously. "Sound and Vision" is better for mere mortals. "The Absolute Sound" lets you see how the other half lives and occasionally chuckle at them.

I love this magazine!!! As if it isn't hard enough to find anyone out there with a good appreciation of independent film (and by appreciation, I also mean knowledge), but then you have to deal with all these film nerds who think that if it wasn't done on a shoestring budget by a no-name director, it must be bad.
FILMMAKER does an excellent job of giving an overview of the world of independent film, while still providing good discussions of some more mainstream films. It's tough, when reviewing and writing criticism of any art form, to know what to discuss, and I think that FILMMAKER does this.
