Seventeen magazine looks harmless, right? Each cover features seemingly innocuous, young women-starlets in excessive makeup and unhealthy and insecure obsession with appearance, right? WRONG!!!! Beneath Seventeen's brittle veneer of frivolous, teen idols lies a gritty underbelly of wrong-headed advice which misleads impressionable, female teens into a world of lasciviousness, hardness, and disrespectability. Seventeen's pages contain ANYTHING BUT the old proverb of "sugar and spice and everything nice!!!!"

The foundation of my shock at the content of Seventeen lies exclusively at the departments and scathingly questionable articles the editors of Seventeen include. I base my implication against Seventeen on its Dec. 07/Dec. 08 issue and specifically a few, choice articles therein, ... Read More

I bought this for dirt cheap, maybe $5-8 for the year. My daughter loves getting this each month and often asks if her current issue's arrived yet. I didn't give the full amount of stars because I'm not crazy about some of the articles and I don't like the ads selling to my child. That aside, there are some useful and entertaining things in there, too. I bought it for a 14 year old though now that I've looked at it I think it may be more appropriate for around 16.

I had a subscription a number of times, and found it almost comparable to "Seventeen," or "YM." While I find the gossip sections in any of these publications, J-14, offers a little less of it. Their articles are of good length. Unlike "BOP," "Teen Machine," and "Pop Star," "J-14," is in full color, and every other page isn't a pin-up, or poster.
One con is the choice to include Eminem, Dainty Kaine, and some others I feel aren't best for young teens. Paris Hilton is one such individual. We are all human, but her continued poor influences, are a bad influence on preteens!

This magazine is definitely a keeper. It teaches kids to cope with their age problems in a great way, telling real life stories. Has all the fun activities and fashion and care tips as well. Both my 8 year old and the 11 year old daughters love it.

My daughter received this as a Christmas gift and we have only received 3 issues. Customer Service says they'll extend the subscription...but what good is that if you don't get them?

I've written to them numerous times and they always come back saying "it was sent on xxx". But one time, I actually talked to someone and they came up with a different mailing date so I am inclined to believe they just make them up. I've never had any problem receiving any of my mail and don't believe that my mailman is swiping this mag.

It sounds like they just don't ship them.

Brio magazine is a christian girl's magazine for about 13-16 year olds, although it could be for as young as 8 or 9. Brio and Beyond is just the 'graduated' version, for 16-22 year olds. Being in the "brio" age group, I would highly reccomend Brio. It's the only magazine I am subscribed too, and I read it front to back the day it arrives in the mail. I really couldn't see a magazine more suitable for teen girls. It is perfect, and has a lot of fun suggestions to do with friends and siblings or yourself. one of my favorites was when they gave gace masks recipes, another one was Chai tea recipes. And that's just an example. They have short fiction stories, an 'ask susie' column, daily devotional, fashion, beauty, entertainment, and so much more! this would be perfect for a girl's christmas gift (that's actually how ... Why do these magazines sell so well? They have dreamy pop stars on posters, and gossip, passing off as facts. This publication does just that.
They may have one or two feature stories.
Music artist are a huge draw, though few things are ever said about them. Instead comes a repeat of their favorites, and dislikes. I have a ton of these publication. Each has their own little quirks, making them more appealing to certain individuals.
Things have changed since the earlier teen magazines which consisted of mainly pictures, and not all in color.
However, these magazines need to further rethink. These magazines continue to push girls into something they may not want to be. There are females out there who could careless about the beauty, makeup, and fashion tips.

I have been receiving Brio for a little more than four years. I am now about to turn 17 and have upgraded to Brio and Beyond. To be honest it surprised and disappointed me to see some of the reviews that brio got. It's pretty safe to say that if you want a "right" review about brio, then turn to a present reader, and a current teenager.
First off, let me begin by saying that I don't think that I could give brio enough thank you's. It makes me laugh to myself when I see how people take magazines like brio for granted, calling it "brainwashing," "morality in disguise," or "Christian claptrap." If this was the case, I would have chucked my subscription out awhile ago. Yes, I admit that there are things in the magazine that I have my own beliefs about, but the awesome thing about brio is that they never push anything ... Read More
