Maxim rode the men's magazine gold rush in the late 1990s, leading Stuff, FHM and a host of other PG-13 fare that filled the convenience store racks as Playboy, Penthouse and the hard cores were either dropped completely or were tucked behind the clerk hidden behind individual black plastic wrappers. Maxim is the last Laddie still in print in the U.S., having witnessed the print burials for FHM (1996 to 2007) and Stuff (1998 to 2007). Maxim's putrefaction is evident to its subscribers, hence the heavily discounted subscriber rates available today. This subscription is my introduction to Smithsonian and it comes two months after I ordered it. I'd actually forgotten about ordering it! For 12 issues of thought provoking articles at essentially $1 per issue, I think it's a good buy. The articles are well written and not something I'd just look up on Wikipedia. They make you think a bit broader in scope than during the course of an ordinary day, and I like that. Pro's: +Intelligently written articles on unusual topics +$1 per issue at current Amazon rates. +Photography is a good addition to the articles, but it doesn't overtake them. I received a free subscription to this magazine over the past year. While the recipes look decidant - they are not really something that I would make. I am a working mother of 2 small children, I don't really have time to come home from work and whip up a Gourmet Meal. The ingredients are also uncommon items that would need to be bought in specialty stores. I imagine that I should have guessed by the title that the magazine is not really in my cooking league. However, if you like to cook and use fancy ingredients - this is probably the magazine for you!

Have been a big fan of Men's Health for years and was so happy when Women's Health came out. To me, this is the top "fitness" magazine for women. It's not to shallow, but not like "Good Housekeeping" or something your mother would read. Definitely some good tips in here. I have found it helpful in changing up my workouts and keeping motivated. Will it work for you? My suggestion is to get a single issue and check it out before buying a subscription.

Vegetarian Times is pretty lame. It is not very vegan friendly, take no issues on vegetarian issues and many of the recipes are so filled with dairy or eggs that they are unhealthful.... VegNews is a much better magazine as is Vegetarian Journal. I have subscribed to Vegetarian Times since 1984 and am letting my subscription lapse this year. I find nothing in the magazine interesting...and am also annoyed that many of the ads in the magazine are for non-vegetarian products....

I give this magazine to my son-in-law every year for his birthday. He reads EVERY page and passes along some great info to me now and then. Seems it's very readable and full of good advice.

Just look at the cover...is this magazine targeted at the single male or what?....but GQ isn't glib...it has great articles,great photography,it's quality! If you enjoy this magazine you will almost certianly enjoy the new dvd "Single a documentary film"..it features a cast of entertaing and thought provoking experts,comics,Singer/songwriters and "real life" people sharing their insights and observations about the complexities of relationships in todays crazy world" Also available on Amazon.com

This magazine is a lighter version of Cosmo. But to do the magazine justice there are indeed more in-depth and interesting articles about people and issues compared to the mostly sex and dating tip-filled (and bad tips if I might add) Cosmopolitan Magazine. Overall, I think Glamour magazine is entertaining. I enjoy it. I used to love the more humorous segments with a girl acting out something embarrassingly goofy on the streets and being photographed but it seems like they've been veering away from that. I also enjoy the book reviews (which also seems to be decreasing) .. hopefully it's not slowly evolving into a Cosmo rival full-blown. I don't plan to discontinue my subscription any time soon!

I will be brief. I received this as a gift and am not a hobby or any other type of gourmet cook. However, I am impressed. It is well put together- great articles, supported by high quality photography and recipes that so surprisingly, are not intimidating. My college age daughter, now ever so sensitive to good quality food versus poor quality food was drawn to the magazine. I have ordered her a subscription for Christmas. Don't tell. :)
