Long time subscriber to the New Yorker but they upped their price and tried to automatically charge my credit card so I was happy to find it cheaper here on amazon.

I used to read Harper's when I was a cynical 20-something. Now that I'm a somewhat less cynical 30-something, I just can't take the nearly hysterical atmosphere of gloom that pervades it. Life is grim for many around the world--always has been, always will. Wallowing in that grimness isn't in anyone's interest. Additionally, Harper's doesn't give voice to alternative political viewpoints--if they had their way, the editors would pack the courts, congress, and White House with liberals no matter the cost. This is a pluralist society and a magazine with the intellectual firepower of Harper's at its disposal should be strong enough to admit a range of views. Let the Harper's politburo have their funereal fun and read The New Yorker instead.

The Nation is a great publication that has featured the works of scholarly writers such as Eric Alterman, Barbara Ehrenreich, Noam Chomsky and Norman Mailer. Though the issues addressed and the opinions expressed are often labeled as leftist, this magazine nonetheless contains some very thought-provoking nuances and propositions for a better America that sound intelligent. Though many are outraged about some of the stances that the editors and contributors of The Nation have taken, their retorts often fall short of being strong, tangible, clearly expressed responses. From what I see and hear, too many discussions from them center around using diatribes and trying with no success to portray or effectively deconstruct the perceived merits and flaws of this work or the like. I wanted to give this magazine subscription as a gift but was unable to order it with a gift card or gift notice. I had to call the recipient to tell him to be on the lookout for the magazine to start in 4 to 6 weeks. It would be nice if you offered a gift option with your magazine subscriptions.

As as Senior Citizen I am taking a Class on Creative Writing, I thought the Magazine "Writer" would help me get an insite into the world of Writing as well as some hints on writing. I was not disappointed, I have learned from my first issue, now I am looking forward to the next issue.

I placed an order for subscription for the magazine on June 30. It is October now and I still have not received any issues of the. When I checked on the magazine web site it showed that I have no subscription with them. I started writing amazon inquiring about the magazine but they have been referring me back and forth to the magazine subscription unit with no clear results. I requested a refund from amazon which I still have not received. My next step will be to make a claim with my credit card. Very disappointing amazon customer service. The magazine, though, is really interesting and intellectually stimulating so this review should not have any bearing to the contents of The Atlantic itself.

this magazine is usually well received among progressive activists although many of us had a major problem with some coverage in the past. i won't get to it at this time but i must say that the last one i've read (?May/June edition) had a very good coverage in the issue of the prison industrial complex, putting human faces behind all the build up of prisons, the absurd increase in the prison population in the U.S. by far leading in the incarceration of our people, young and old alike, the racist system we still live in, etc. also, the coverage for the issue of foreclosure was very thorough and finally shed some light on my questions regarding the reasons why, and who is responsible for this mess. check it out.

Most every issue offers at least one interview with a famous or semi- famous author. This spotlighted author could be the author of a book, a screen writer, or some other type of author. These interviews offer some good insight into writing success and the necessary skills and sacrifices to succeed at your chosen craft. Aside from the interviews, Writer's Digest is basically a magazine of tips and advice. One issue might talk about ways to break into the business of movie reviewing for newspapers. I'd read a single issue off the newstand and wanted to indulge myself with a subscription. I asked for it for Christmas last year and my son was kind of enough to give me a gift subscription. Despite repeated attempts at phone and e-mail contact by both my son and myself we have been resolutely ignored and no magazines have ever arrived. There just isn't any excuse for that. Colour me disillusioned and very, very angry. Not recommended at all, of course. Paul Weiss
