My 10 year old son loves this magazine. I got him a subscription a year ago and as it was about to end he begged me for a renewal. He looks forward to the arrival of each issue and often refers back to old copies after he has finished reading them. This is a great magazine for kids that love sports!

3.Maxim (1-year) from: Dennis Publishing

Maxim rode the men's magazine gold rush in the late 1990s, leading Stuff, FHM and a host of other PG-13 fare that filled the convenience store racks as Playboy, Penthouse and the hard cores were either dropped completely or were tucked behind the clerk hidden behind individual black plastic wrappers.

Maxim is the last Laddie still in print in the U.S., having witnessed the print burials for FHM (1996 to 2007) and Stuff (1998 to 2007). Maxim's putrefaction is evident to its subscribers, hence the heavily discounted subscriber rates available today. If you were unfortunate enough to receive a gift subscription to Maxim or, worse yet, bought one for yourself, you've can no doubt bear witness to the decay. The magazine simply isn't interesting or compelling to read. You could find more ... Read More

4.Smithsonian from: Smithsonian

This subscription is my introduction to Smithsonian and it comes two months after I ordered it. I'd actually forgotten about ordering it!

For 12 issues of thought provoking articles at essentially $1 per issue, I think it's a good buy. The articles are well written and not something I'd just look up on Wikipedia. They make you think a bit broader in scope than during the course of an ordinary day, and I like that.

Pro's:
+Intelligently written articles on unusual topics
+$1 per issue at current Amazon rates.
+Photography is a good addition to the articles, but it doesn't overtake them.

Con's:
- Arrives two months after ordered.
- Lots and lots of advertisements. (The same or perhaps more numerous than the articles.)

I received a free subscription to this magazine over the past year. While the recipes look decidant - they are not really something that I would make. I am a working mother of 2 small children, I don't really have time to come home from work and whip up a Gourmet Meal. The ingredients are also uncommon items that would need to be bought in specialty stores. I imagine that I should have guessed by the title that the magazine is not really in my cooking league. However, if you like to cook and use fancy ingredients - this is probably the magazine for you!

Don't know the history of this magazine. Thought we would try it for a year. Have been getting "The New Yorker".....so this is quite different. We think it's too heavily based on appealing to those who might want to aspire to the pictures. But it's name is true....vanity. Writing is ok....more self perpetuating....nothing that lifts beyond the realm of materialism.

I'm sure this is more for the tech minded; but, there's still enough in it for the rest of us. If you have time and enjoy spending it thumbing thru magazines, this one is certainly entertaining. The ads are sleek, the men are handsome and there's tidbits of info for everyone.

I picked up a copy of Men's Health when I was at the height of being a work out zealot last year and it seemed like a complete and utter revelation. Tips about diet, work out plans, zillions of factoids to confirm I was on the correct track. I was hooked, bought the next edition and after that got my years subscription.

The bottom line? I quit reading after about six months - I felt like there were only so many 'I was fat and now I am thin' articles I can read and I felt the emphasis on some diet aspects, herbs and unproven substances was a bit suspect once I dug deeper into the research. They put a huge emphasis on protein in the diet when the bottom line is most Western diets have more than enough and there is a substantial body of evidence leaning toward the fact that high protein ...
