Sarita is targeted at young people, students, housewives. Articles are well-written, but offer a partial perspective, as is usual with ideologically influenced magazines. I used to read this when I was young, but then gradually grew out of it, when I realised that their articles were slanted, and often carried misinfomration, much like Soviet publications.

Champak is targeted at young children. Stories are well-written, and mostly based on animals as characters. I used to read this a lot when I was young. It offers a Godless world-view, and tries to avoid referring to any traditions or cultural heritage. Some of the stories have very subtle political slant, which is absolutely unnoticeable by its reades, and unlikely to be noticed by their guardians. A kind of inverted Panchtantra.

Woman's Era is targeted at junior level office workers, who are unlikely to figure out its agenda. Many of the articles are well-written, useful and interesting. However, most the stories have a curious twist. For instance, one may depict a young married woman, who comes tantalisingly close to having an affair with an attractive stranger, but then steps back. I think the editors carefully assess how much its middle-class readers will tolerate, and stop at that. I suspect that they are trying to very subtly promote the Communist view: marriage is irrelevant ... Read More
