This is a lovely coffee maker, but too expensive for some of us. Melitta plastic cones hold similar paper filters and cost about $2 to $5, depending where bought. Melitta produces the same wonderful coffee. Melitta and Hugo Bentz patented the paper coffee filter in 1908, perhaps before Dr. Schlumbohm was even born.

Chemex, in my opinion, makes the best damn regular coffee. I've tried french presses, vacuum systems, etc.; Chemex 8 Cup Coffee Maker CM 8A tops them all. And it's not even the coffee maker that is the key but the filter paper. Since the Chemex system was invented by a scientist, back in the '30's, I can only assume he was using some laboratory filter paper in his shop and figured out that was what was making his coffee taste so good. As far as I can tell, Chemex filter paper removes the slightly sour/acid taste from coffee, that I find objectionable. This, in turn, lets through the complex bitter/sweet flavors and allows me to taste them more fully. Years ago a friend of mine showed me how to make the best tasting coffee. He took a plain piece of paper towel from a kitchen roll and laid it on the top of a regular coffee mug. He put a couple of spoonfuls of ordinary ground coffee in the towel and slowly poured hot water over the coffee until the mug was full. It was a delicate and somewhat messy operation, but it was the best coffee I ever tasted. The Chemex coffee maker achieves the same results in a more organized fashion with far superior paper filters that were specifically designed for drip brewed coffee. This is the easiest and best way to make coffe by far. The Costa Ricans use a similar method and that speaks for itself.

Ordered this a few weeks ago and it's fantastic! Beautiful to look at when not in use and the brewing process is very simple. The filter really takes all the bitterness out and makes a really smooth cup of coffee. It's a bit hard to clean without a bottle-cleaner style spongewand but that's easy to find. I live in a small apartment in NYC and didn't have enough space for an electric coffee maker -- so this is perfect!

I agree with everything the former reviewer stated in connection with this Chemex. I only wish that Amazon also carried the larger size--I believe it is 3 to 6 cups, which is even better for the morning coffee I make for myself. And, as the former reviewer noted, it is a beautiful shape--an esthetic pleaure.
