My plan was to eventually get this expander all along. I have always been a fan of Tivo, and when the right deal came my way I got the new Dual tuner HD Tivo that only recorded 20 hrs in HD. Tivo at the time was selling a larger Tivo with I believe 40 hrs recording in HD for $400-$500. 20 Hours is definitely not enough in my house, and if you are considering this, it's probably not enough in your house either. At the moment they are selling a beast with 150 hrs in HD recording for $600! Bottom line is that this expander worked perfectly right away. Setup to the device is as easy as plugging it in. Loaded well, but just last week had a one year old Western Digital 500GB Pro Edition hard drive fail completely... so, we'll see how this one holds up, but I worry just a bit. Maybe I just got a bad one (500GB), or maybe WD just has so-so quality control..... time will tell. However, this one is nice and small, and I like the "no brick" USB only design... it fits nicely in my safety deposit box where I store it as a safe, safe backup for my 48,000 song iTunes library.

I've had this drive running for one day now, and so far it is very quiet and seems to run cooler than the 500GB Western Digital drive that it replaced. I'm planning to replace my other 500 GB WD drives with this one if it continues to perform well over the next few days. A word of warning for users of Silicon Image (SIIG) SIi3114 SATA controller cards (and perhaps other SIIG cards). When I first received this 1TB hard drive, I got an error. Although my SIIG 3114 controller recognized the drive (i.e., correctly reported the model number), it did not recognize the size, and my machine would not boot. Why pay for someone else to build one (one size fits does not fit all) when building your own is not too difficult and you can build with quality parts tailored to your own specific needs. Case in point, the WD 640GB HDD. Large hard drive prices are economical right now. Generally speaking, the larger the drive, the less the cost per gigabyte (GB). At Amazon's prices the WD 640GB drive was about $10 bucks more than the WD Caviar 16 320 GB drive with the same cache. Western Digital has recently color coded their drives: Black (high performance), Blue (mainstream) and Green (no brainer: ecologically friendly-for a hard drive). I've only been using my drive for a week so I can't comment on longevity, but this is the loudest laptop hard drive I have used in years. It is considerably louder than the 60gb Toshiba it replaced - and that was a four year old drive. The WD makes lots of clicking and ticking sounds and an odd sort of whooshing sound I've not heard before. Anyone who places a high value on silence would do well to look at another line of drives.

This drive was exactly what I wanted: - large capacity - FW800 - USB2 - eSata - quiet (no fan) - HFS pre-formatted for Mac - easy configuration utility to convert to a mirrored drive array - easy to exchange drives - stylish - compact I have had very good luck with Western Digital drives so far. Hopefully this one will continue that trend. If you have ever lost data, pictures, or important information, you now know you must back up all your critical items. Western Digital makes an excellent product. I have purchased several, both the Passport and the My Book external drives, some for gifts. Not just quality, but the ease of set up and use. Don't lose your mp3 data! When downloading the latest version of my particular mp3 software, it crashed. Had I not been in the habit of backing up my entire "MyMusic" file, I would have spent hours replacing it all. I just went under "file", then "add folder to library" and put my entire "MyMusic" folder--saved on my Passport--back in the mp3 library.
