So far, I'm very happy with this drive--it's been really fast and extremely handy. I love the fact that it is USB-powered, and I can transport my entire hard drive from home no matter where I go. I did have an older WD drive (I think it was only 80GB) that just stopped working on me after about 3 years, so I am going to be careful and not consider this drive a "permanent" backup. I would still keep a separate backup of important/permanent files. However, for day-to-day access to all of my documents, this is just great--one of my favorite things. It is also a perfect gift for a new parent--all the pictures and video of baby really fill up a hard drive quickly!

I was looking for an inexpensive storage solution for my ever-growing closed file folder on my work laptop. I was constantly having to burn copies of files to CD-R's and then delete massive amounts of data off my tiny laptop hard drive. Well, the My Book 500GB was a perfect solution! It connected very easy and was a snap to use. I'm completely satisfied and have had no problems with the unit since receiving it. It has an auto on/off feature which is nice and is very quiet. Since I'm sure you understand the basics of an external hard drive so let me make this brief. This drive worked perfectly right out of the box. It is quiet, it is fast, the software provided is garbage trial-ware but you don't really care because you're going to delete it all when you reformat the drive to NTFS anyhow. 1TB for this price is fantastic. These external drives are simply perfection! Not only do these smartly designed drives look great and makes real-estate a non-issue, but they work fast and silent, good enough to use as a main drive for Vista Media Center downloading tons of regular and HD shows. Given the reasonable price I was able to purchase 2 more so that space never becomes an issue for me and never having to worry about the delete function in MCE or backing up onto DVDs is a major plus+!

Fast and quiet drive at a great price. Windows did not recognize the drive at first, but after downloading their setup utility from the WD site, it was a snap. Be warned though it doesn't come with any cables. Some people have written that theirs' did, and some have written that it did not. Play it safe and order a SATA data and power cable just in case if you don't have any spares.

Bought this to upgrade my 60GB PS3 and it has not given me any issues so far(knock on wood). It comes to 300GB formatted...PS3 OS eats a little of it but overall great drive.
