Arrived in a box in another box held by typical drive black plastic end holders. OEM so no cable/screws or software. Downloaded Max Blaster 5 from Seagate site to clone original drive. Takes 3 hr to format thru windows XP drive management and 1 and a half hour to copy 200 G from old drive with Max Blaster. Had to change BIOS to see both drives to clone. Moved new drive to boot position. Completely disconnected old drive before first reboot on new drive.

I find the Seagate FA 500GB to be easy to use and quickly backed up the files on my 2 computers. That's what I needed and thats what I got. You can keep it connected to do a daily update. I just hook it up from time to time, click on the latest document and photo folders I've accumulated and in less than a minute it's done. Feels much safer knowing I've got all that info stored somewhere other than the computer. In my son's world- the world of late teens and early 20's, there seems to be some real threats to a person's hard drive. He has the same Seagate and uses it more often than not to reload his entire load of files after someone or something crashes his computer online. Mean world out there. Good to have one of these.

Just turn this on when I'm backing up my harddrive, haven't had any problems so far, the backup software that came with it won't back up a full partition just wanted to back up folders not individual files, wound up using the backup software I already had installed on my computer. Haven't had overheating problems, got my fingers crossed.

As noted in other reviews this is a bare drive, wrapped only in a thin plastic anti-static bag. In stark contrast to every other hard drive that I have ordered over the Internet, Amazon provides almost no protective packaging for the drive in shipment. When I opened the package from Amazon, tossed on my front porch by the UPS driver, I noticed a few air-packs on top of the drive and ABSOLUTELY NO PROTECTION BETWEEN THE BOTTOM OF THE DRIVE AND THE BOTTOM OF THE BOX. In other words, the bare drive was placed in the box, a few air-packs were placed on top, and the package was shipped. It is worth adding that Seagate will void the drive's 5-year warranty if "the drive experiences shock in excess of 350 Gs." How much is 350Gs? It is easily knocked over based on its design, and they dont tell you in the literature that your data will then be unrecoverable! Their customer service is also unreliable in their answers. So you'll get a new seagate if still under warranty, but your data is toast. We even sent to a super expensive (estimate of $3,000) data recovery place and they couldnt even get it back for us. SAVE YOUR MONEY AND BUY TWO 80GB external hard drives and make two backups of your data and keep in separate places- learn from our mistake!

This is an updated review, in which I go from 3 stars to 1 star. First review: I gave this 3 stars with some reluctance. I bought it because it's a Seagate with a 5-yr warranty, and I've had good experience with Seagates. I use it as a photo backup drive; it is not powered up most of the time. The drive works, in general, but with enough problems that I would not recommend it to a person without plenty of computer experience -- that is, my 80-something mother who simply needs a simple backup drive. I manage to keep mine going because I can use DiskWarrior every few weeks to rebuild the directory when the drive becomes suddenly unreadable... which it does, inexplicably, and gives me the "Unreadable Drive" error message. I bought this at Wal-Mart for about the same price. Its perfect. There is nearly 300 GB of useable free space. is about 1/8 of the size of the 80 GB drive it is replacing. Imagine about two credit cards from top to bottom and the thickness of an iPod classic. I've got about 18,000 music and video files on it and about 17,000 other documents and it is maybe 1/2 to 2/3 full. It is a great way to back up data and to work between different PCs and Macs.
