My first external hard drive was a WD500, but two months after the warranty expired, so did the hard drive. It is now in my trash bin. I talked over the possible reasons for its early demise and it came down to the drive is always on, which could easily burn it out. The Iomega has an on/off switch, so I only have to turn it on when it is time to back up the computer. I think this may be a much better design and will give it a longer life.

I bought this Iomega UltraMax for my iMac G5 running Leopard 10.5.5. I use it as a place for Time Machine to do backups, as an extra scratch disk for Photoshop, and a storage place for a multitude of images which I use in my work to design greeting cards. All you have to do is plug it in, turn it on, and there it is. Nothing could be simpler and it works like a charm. Highly recommend.

This is an awesome little drive! I purchased it to create full backups of my iMac (OS X 10.5.5) that I can store in my safe deposit box, and I haven't been disappointed. It comes pre-formatted for OS X, so you can just plug it in and go (OS X recognizes it immediately after plugging it in via USB). I chose to reformat with Leopard just to ensure that any file system changes under Leopard were taken into account, and the reformatting process took all of 30 seconds, no problems. This drive is all I expected from an external hard drive and more, it functions seamlessly with my computer and compared to other external hard drives I have, is "super quiet". Accessing the drive is effortless, installation was simple and straight forward. All in all a very good buy.

Very easy to use. I literally just hooked it up and it was ready to go - no setup software, no disk formatting. My system is MS Windows XP. The only negative for some people might be the 40 gig memory, but for those who need to back up only their data files, it's probably more than big enough.
