for the Tivo brand wi-fi adapter. This unit doesn't accept any other brand of USB wi-fi adapter. Never mind that the earlier Tivo's did. Never mind that 802.11x is an international standard and all compliant units provide the same functionality. This is bald-faced profit-gouging. I thought the Tivo brand was better than this.

This is my second DVR. I have to say, for nearly half the price of my Pioneer DVR, This Philips model offers all the same features and is very easy to use right out of the box. I rave about the "pause live TV" feature to my friends. You will never have to miss a play again. Also, because of the hours I work, I have programmed the built in tuner to record all my favorite shows and I watch them when I get home. The timer programming allows for specific recording as well as every Monday, or every day, and so on. Very handy feature. The hard drive in this DVR is roughly 80GB smaller than what my Pinoneer has, but I have never come close to filling it up. After spending years with Cox Communications DVRs (Motorola and then Scientific Atlanta) and dealing with all the problems they cause (not recording everything, not recording at all, crashing, dying etc.) we decided to try TiVo. I have yet to find a flaw with this piece of equipment. It records what its supposed to, when its supposed to. I love my new TiVo.

First, a little background. I started with a TiVo series 2 a couple years ago, but recently I've upgraded to an HD system/surround sound, so I figured it was time to upgrade my cable service so I can receive HD programming. Little did I know at the time how difficult it was for cable companies to "allow TiVo to be compatible with their system/network." They kept trying to get me to use their "better than TiVo" DVRs, and insisted that TiVo was wholly incompatible with their system. This product works well, and the saved video is incredible. However, the bundled software is awful, and customer support has been disappointing. If you are considering using this to save files and then convert them to another format for viewing, please reconsider. I had planned on using this to create video files that I would convert and watch on a PS3. However, after saving a file using this PVR, the included SW does not work as advertised. It will take several hours to convert a file that, in the end, does not work. If you want to create files that you can only view on your PC then this product should work fine. If you want to convert them to view them elsewhere in some other format then prepare to experience some disappointment using the broken bundled software.

I read many Web Forum discussions about the TiVo Series 2 DVR. Many experts stated flatly that the machine will not operate without a TiVo contract. I have recorded a few hours of programming with no TiVo service. It is necessary to log in with the sevice to receive the operating system over the phone line; for this there is no charge. I do not recommend this product for the faint of heart. For the technically inclined, the machine will provide a lasting source of amusement at a relatively small investment. The vendor gave excellent service.

I am an early adopter and bought the HD Series 3 when it first came out. For programming, it can't be beat. Tivo, and particularly the online scheduling feature, make the cable company provided DVR's look pathetic. Picture quality is great, everything great. However.... You must be aware that some cable companies broadcast certain HD channels in what is called Switched Digital Video (SDV)format. This is a two-way format designed, in theory, for interactive operations between the viewer and the channel. Tivo does not support SDV! That means that on my cable system, Cox, I cannot receive many HD channels including NFL Network and about 6 or 7 more.
