It's better than the one of the WWII, where the American and the Japs run out of ammo, become friends but then kill each other. Don't remember the name.

I'm not a Stanley Kubrick fan, nor do I particularly care for Hollywood films. So I was surprised and delighted to discover what a gem of a film "Paths of Glory" is. Well directed, for the most part well acted, well directed, and conveying a great message: what more could one ask for? The title is ironic. The plot revolves around a failed because impossible military assault on the German trenches in 1916. An oily, egoistic French general, superbly played by George Macready, orders the assault to further his career. When it fails, he furiously orders three men from the decimated 701st Regiment that attempted the assault to be selected as examples, charged with cowardice, and court-martialed. A great World War 1 classic aviation movie. The aerial combat footage, done without any computer virtual reality animation is quite spectacular. The acting, especially from the european cast was quite good.

Magical and delightful and uplifting. I don't really have much to say in addition to what others have said, but I figured I'd weigh in with some stars to counter the 1 star people. They may be more devoted to the text of the book than the rest of us. I come to the film simply as appreciating whether it's a good movie as a movie, and it is. Much preferable to the other A Little Princess movie (although my wife disagrees).

Valiant effort at recreating the feel of WWI aviation but 'over acting' is a detriment. It is still an enjoyable motion picture none the less.

Jean Renoir's 1937 black and white film, Grand Illusion (La Grande Illusion), is often bandied about with Citizen Kane on the list of all time great films, but unlike that film, Grand Illusion was a commercial and critical sensation from its initial release. While both are arguably great films, neither is really within sniffing distance of any mythic top spot. Both have flaws, but Grand Illusion has more flaws than Citizen Kane and is clearly the lesser film, although it's still certainly a very good film. It was written by Renoir- son of the famed Impressionist painter Auguste Renoir, and Charles Spaak, based upon Renoir's own adventures as a World War One Flyboy, and in many ways is well ahead of Hollywood films of that era, in terms of dealing with life and the way common people really spoke. I know what you're thinking -- with John Ford and Jimmy Cagney, how could one go wrong? By using a stage play as the source material, that's how. The action, such as it is, rarely leaves the confines of a saloon and its environs. If you're looking for a gripping treatment of WWI trench warfare, you'd better keep looking. This movie is not about WWI at all -- it's about (1) a love triangle made up of 3 one-dimensional characters, and (2)drinking. And in fact, it's really alot more about (2) than (1). It is, in fact, an anthem to something that Ford and his entourage believed in religiously: alchohol. Why does the French girl like either of two guys? We never find out.
