I saw this on PBS in May of 2008. I had previously seen 'Into Thin Air' several times which is the account by a writer, Jon Krakauer, who was on this fateful climb. I enjoyed this movie a great deal more since it was in the words of those caught in the storm that night. It felt more 'real' to hear their recounts of what happened and what they went through. I trust David Breashears account given the number of times he has climbed Everest and his experiences. He had to bring down the body of a climber who died during that very trip, Chen Yu-Nan. If you want to know what can happen to a climber on Everest, this is the DVD for you.

Pure Fiction.....not accurate. If you knew the truth about Russ Brice and the Discovery Channel....it would make you sick. Some people will do ANYTHING for money.

I know...I was there. I was part of the 2006 Himex expedition and I am on the DVD.

The film is very professionally done with beautiful shots. To me, it's worth the money just for that. But I think what I appreciated most about it is that it doesn't do what a lot of these films do in terms of being melodramatic. It's a very straightforward and very accurate portrayal of Himalayan climbing, from the widespread sickness to the yellow snow and even death. I most definitely recommend it -- one of the best I've seen.

When I was in high school, watching National Geographic specials on television was a requirement in science classes. At times, we were shown the older ones on film. This tape is a brief synopsis of many of the specials, starting out with a title image and then showing a few minutes of the original.
This is nature programming at its most raw and best. In general, the specials are not for children, the one depicting lions shows them taking down, killing and consuming their prey. However, they are as educational as film can ever be because after a certain age, nature should not be sugar-coated. It must be presented in the natural form, complete with the birth, growls, snarls and the blood of a violent death.
