How The West Was Won came out in Cinerama in 1962 and when released to the average theatres, the lines from the Cinerama process were frozen in a 35mm print. The hope was that the film might make one overlook this distraction. No such luck.

There is one scene to see: the Buffalo stampede

Perhaps too, the Jimmy Stewart /Carroll Baker love scene, where you can see Stewart cracking up at the lines he has to deliver.

This is sheer nonsense, and unintentionally funny in mny spots: Debbie Reynolds as an old woman in her wig, Karl Malden in any scene, and Agnes Moorehead.
Skip this one, and see The Wild Bunch , Once Upon A Time In the West, and Ride The High Country, and Cat Ballou.

Note: This review contains spoilers; please do not read if you do not wish to find out important plot points before viewing the film.

This movie has so much---stunning scenery, a great cast, tight writing, economic plot, and haunting music---and it takes its time to unfold its tale of stark vengeance and redemption. This is unmistakably and indelibly a Sergio Leone vision. One could imagine that Clint Eastwood was first offered the role of Harmonica, the avenger, and then it went to Charles Bronson. However it worked out, Bronson was superb as the Everyman hero/possible avenging angel character; he projected a subtle sorrow in his piercing eyes, even his body language, that made him perfect for the role.

The plot is multilayered, revolving around a lovely widow (Claudia ... Read More

This is an unintentional parody of the Western movie. The cliches, stereotypes, corny lines, and macho nonsense are present in abundance. There are signs of trouble from the beginning, when we learn immediately that there will be a flashback: Jimmy Stewart is shouting his lines. Later, John Wayne swaggers and sniggers, Andy Devine whimpers and attempts to be amusing, Edmund O'Brien does an awful drunk act, things are rowdy in the local saloon...well, you understand if you're over 13. Watch how fast Stewart recovers from a savage beating after he sips some brandy. And don't miss the by now obligatory civil rights salute. The ending is wholly predictable. My educated guess is that John Ford, Lee Marvin, and many others on the set were tipping the bottle a bit too much. This is a dreadful, if often ... Read More

Save the critical eye, ear and mind for the 20th viewing of this story.
It is a multiple love story, POSSIBLY with the greatest love story involving a dead South Pacific princess and her still-devoted husband.
There is the polygamous masculine love story of "The Duke's" title character and his two old WWII shipmates.
There is the raucous relationship of an incredible Lee Marvin-created character and a somewhat bawdy Dorothy Lamour, who yearns for Donovan, but is perfectly happy settling for Marvin and his new toy train.
There is the love story of the new arrival from Boston, the real hero's daughter by a Boston shipping aristocrat. She arrives on a commercial venture intended to boost her own selfish economic position, quickly learns to love the father and her father's three children with ... Read More

This is the movie that made me fall in love with Westerns. I must have seen it over a dozen times, but I still enjoy it. It's easily forgotten that this was a mold-breaking movie in its day and it paved the way for Sergio Leone. Roy Rogers and Gene Autry could never gain membership in the Seven. For that matter, this club would probably reject every John Wayne character that preceded the film. (However, either J. B. Brooks or Rooster Cogburn could have made this the Magnificent Eight.)

The Special Edition DVD includes a new making of documentary with some interesting insights into the chemistry that worked to make this ensemble movie great. A trivia question: How many times does Yul Brynner take off his hat in the movie?
