Both my husband and I were touched by the combined grandeur of the venue, the beauty of the voices and the spiritual power of the selections. This is what Christmas should be about.

Suicide Club was a good ride. Some parts very random and creepy but very different than any American flick I can think of.

My opinion about this DVD is not at all as technical as the others I've read here. And it shouldn't, it's beyound my skills. But, as a only recently afficionate of classical operatic songs, I must tell that I came across with this DVD almost by chance on the internet and since I bought it I got really "arrested" by it. To my feeling, Karajan's way of conducting without the scores and with passionate movements, just like his whole body is singing the music, seems trully genuine, although certainly not conventional. As I could see in many videos with him teaching and rehearsing, this seems to reflect the way he really thinks an feel about music.
The second remarkable impressions was with Ghiaurov's performance. I heard him for the first time on the Gounod's "Faust" DVD, as as much sounding and ... Read More

I saw this on PBS. It is the story of an orphanage called Agape in South Africa and the children of Agape. All the children have been through difficult lives and many have lost their parents through AIDS. The most charasmatic of the children is 12-year-old Slindile who's brother is also dying of AIDS and the parents are already dead.

It's a must-see! I bought this DVD for all my relatives for Christmas gift giving. I will never forget these kids!

My title applies primarily to the 1965 black & white film of Alexis Weissenberg playing Stravinsky's Three Movements from Petrushka, amazingly creatively filmed in Stockholm by Åke Falck. I remember seeing this film on TV almost forty years ago and the memory of it has stayed with me ever since. I am so pleased finally to have a copy of that marvelous film. Weissenberg was in his early thirties at the time and at the very height of his considerable form. The views provided by Falck are highly unusual but each has a clear intention of adding to our enjoyment of the music by showing us in closeup both the hands of Weissenberg and the movements of the mechanism of the piano; the camera actually almost climbs inside the piano. The whole thing is filmed with high-key contrast. This is one of the great ... Read More

A wonderful treat to see these three great musicians playing together! They are so intense and involved in the music, a true inspiration to us all! Outstanding work by Daniel Barenboim to be able to conduct and play - he is truly one of the greatest pianists of our time!

I happened upon this performance on PBS several years ago and was mesmerized. The music itself is gorgeous, but listening to it while viewing the Medieval and Renaissance art is exquisite.

This is a must-have in my Christmas collection, and I have bought it for several friends as well!

If you want to see stunning night vistas of Italian architecture and hear talented voices performing well, you might want to watch the first 10 minutes of this DVD and then just listen to the rest. If you want to view an enactment of Leonard Bernstein's Mass, however, this presentation will disappoint you.

The Celebrant and the leading boy soprano are superb, but they work against daunting limitations. I don't know if the director decided to reinterpret the story or if the Vatican censored it, but Bernstein's central point vanishes in this production.

Disillusionment begins with the stage. About 1/3 the size it needs to be, and 2/3 occupied by an overly large chorus, it is dominated by a sculpture which represents Jesus as neither man nor God (one of the central questions of ... Read More

Audra McDonald sounds fantastic... I'm an instant fan!
Everything looks and sounds as perfect as you could imagine. This will easily be your favorite Christmas DVD that's great to watch any time of the year.
How can I be just the second person to write a review for this fantastic audio and visual treat? By all rights, there should have been hundreds of fantastic reviews before I ever even thought of putting my thoughts down.
