This is a very good war movie. There isnt much to compare it to. The Somilia thing didnt produce many movies. The movie stayed 80% true to the movie. Read the book and you have basically seen the movie. Lots of action. This movie gives you a little insight to what our special forces can do.

Although I had heard of this film, I never watched it. It came on one of my HD channels this week and decided it was time to check it out. I didn't realize that Christian Bale was in this film and I believe his performance alone makes it worth seeing! Bale is captivating as a young boy separated from his parents in 1941 war time Japan. The film is well produced and the cast is excellent, but I did find some scenes to be a bit too long.

There is also some confusion, which only makes the film seem longer, an example is when Bale's character is hiding in his house for a period of time, they show the swimming pool water going from full to almost completely empty!?? This would take many years and it's obvious that it's not that long a time period. Was there a leak?? It's never explained. ... Read More

I have just seen this film in the Blu-ray format and it is superb!! A previous reviewer complained about the lack of grain in the film but that's what made the transfer so great!! Also there is a brief introduction by Francis Ford Coppola before the film starts and it is very insightful about his experiences in gathering information for this classic film. The transfer, as I stated before, is excellent and duplicates the experience of having seen it in the 70mm format (2:20) in the theatre. Although the film borders very close to 3 hours, this is one of those films that you wish could a little bit longer (Scott dissatisfied with the film and refusing the Oscar, would do a TV film version of Patton's last days). So if you're already a fan of this classic, I do recommend getting this in Blu-ray - ... Read More

Reviews the dvd as a two disk item, implying that it is of less compression. The total program is on one dvd with the #2 disk containing un-needed and undesired material, causing the compression to render the movie a lesser quality.

I really enjoyed this series. It was very realistic and true and had heart. It tells the story of people in the Navy and Marines aboard an aircraft carrier on deployment for 6 months. It also interviews both enlisted people and officers as to why they joined the military, where they are from, and also how they feel about their jobs. They cover what it's like to be away from their family and friends. It shows the day to day life and people at their jobs and what it takes to make the carrier work. They show some of the places where they go for liberty. And it also covers the family members and what it is also like for them to be seperated and reunited with their loved ones. Watch this series in part to find out what it takes to keep America free and also to find out how hard our military works in part ... Read More

Every time I watch this movie I have to stop and take a deep breath - and then go back to watching. So moving that it is almost impossible to believe that this is all true. It makes you think twice about your relationships with other people in this world.

Top ten movie of all time

Great Buy !

Being an active professor, a war film collector, and a twenty-five-year military veteran, I sometimes tend to be overly-critical of war films, mostly in terms of historical accuracy and "situational believability." The pains the producers took make this both an enjoyable film yet as historically accurate as they could are especially noteworthy.

Numerous other reviewers have accomplished excellent detailed descriptions of the unfolding events that evolved into the Battle of Gettysburg, as described in the film, so I will limit my comments to those that I believe will focus on overall quality.

The film accurately presents the evolution of events that slowly build into one of history's most important battles, one that neither side really wanted to fight on this site, despite the fact ... Read More

This is one of my all time favorite movies, I remember watching it with my dad when I was a kid. I also remember seeing it at a theatre in '98 that featured classic movies.
Gary Cooper's portrayal of a man who's only drive is to serve his country honorably when called and save as many of his men as he can is inspiring.
I grew up in Kentucky so Alvin York's story was part of our culture.
This is the type of movie I cannot turn away from, it commands my attention, and it reminds me of what a man should aspire to be.
In the majority of war movies being produced today there is always a focus on special forces or for lack of a better term a scripted hero. York never wanted to be a hero he only wanted what most men who have seen war will tell you, he wanted to stop the guns.
