DVD : Quatermass and the Pit
"Quatermass and the Pit" is the most exciting science fiction/horror hybrid I've seen from Hammer Productions. The plot is intricate, exciting and thought provoking; it offers extremely unique theories of man's origin on earth.

Professor Quatermass (Andrew Keir of "Dracula: Prince of Darkness") is investigating what first appears to be an unexploded bomb found during the construction of a subway line. Upon further examination, he learns that it is an alien spacecraft that is over five million years old. The identity of its crewmembers is quite disturbing. Worse of all, the spacecraft appears to have a life of its own. Pandemonium breaks out in London as the spacecraft takes possession of men's bodies and souls, turning them into killing machines that can't be stopped. ... Read More

DVD : The Plague of the Zombies
*HAMMER pounds the the zombie nail*
The British film industry was churning out horror in the 60's in rabid fashion. After several remakes of old Universal films, they found some fresh deadmeat to serve up--the voodoo zombie sub-genre. This has obvious parallels with WHITE ZOMBIE, but PLAGUE OF THE ZOMBIES shambles alone in its spine-tingling impact.

Doctors are baffled as village people keep falling victim to a mysterious illness. It is eventually discovered that their fate has been forced by a sinister power.

Now I'm not sure if it was intentional or not, but this storyline has strong political tones. You have the arrogant aristocrat who is callous in regards to this fatal "plague" that is sweeping through the community. Autopsies are forbidden. Tombs are turning up empty. ... Read More

DVD : Frankenstein Created Woman
I honestly wasn't expecting much from a movie with a silly title but, this is my favorite Hammer Frankenstein film. It never drags, has a unique plot, and made me laugh during one scene where the three young jerks sing an incredibly rude song beneath the bedroom window of the scarred girl. Peter Cushing gives a fine performance as always. If you collect Hammer films, don't even consider passing on this one.

Kudos to the multiple other posters who recognize this as a winner! It's hard, indeed, to understand why other Hammer fans ignore this entry, particularly since its script is far more literate than many of their other pictures from the same time frame. In any case, the Hammer production team does a wonderful job here of conveying the small village ambience and the screenplay follows Norah Loft's novel very closely. What makes this film so distinctive is its understatement--the horror when it emerges is all the more disquieting since everything seems so idyllic.

Miss Fontaine is superb. Note her scene near the beginning when she is questioned about her nervous breakdown during a job interview. She brings to the sequence and its halting tragic dialogue, the same reticent, diffident charm she displayed nearly 30 years ... Read More

DVD : The Abominable Snowman
An expedition searches for the Yeti of Tibet. These creatures, they learn, are far more superior to men. Using their powers of telepathy, the Yeti begin killing the members of the expedition in order to keep their existence a secret.

"The Abominable Snowman" is a perfect blend of science fiction and horror and was created by those who brought us the highly successful Quatermass films. It stars Hammer horror icon Peter Cushing as a botanist and Forrest Tucker (Sergeant O'Rourke from the TV series "F Troop") as a trapper.

Released in 1957, "The Abominable Snowman" was filmed in black and white. Pity it couldn't have been shot in color as were the Hammer horror classics, "Horror of Dracula, "The Mummy," and "The Curse of Frankenstein." However, since the beautiful, snow covered Himalayans serve ... Read More

DVD : Quatermass 2
Professor Barnard Quatermass (Brian Donlevy of "Gamera the Invincible") returns in "Quatermass 2," the sequel to Hammer Production's "The Quatermass Xperiment." This classic science fiction horror masterpiece is as excellent, if not superior, as the original. Professor Quatermass appears to have mellowed since we first met him; he displays more compassion towards his fellow man.

Professor Quatermass learns that meteorites of uniform size and shape are falling at regular intervals and landing in a particular site. Upon further investigation, he learns the landing site is near a top secret government facility that contains huge domes. He is told that synthetic food is stored in these domes? Synthetic food for whom . . . or what? The true nature of this facility is being kept a secret by a government conspiracy ... Read More

DVD : The Legend of the Seven Golden Vampires/The Seven Brothers meet Dracula
An extravagant claim but one I'm gonna endeavor to back up.
'Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires' is the last horror picture Peter Cushing made for Hammer, and is magnificent. He plays Van Helsing, (yes.. honest!)and to his eternal credit he looks believably close to tears every time he utters an emotionally-charged line like "In Europe it is the crucifix, in Asia; the image of the Lord Buddha".
I adore Peter Cushing anyway, and to see him in any film is good for me, but to see him in a work of this magnitude and gravitas is a real treat. He must be lying there now, thinking about his 50-odd year career, each performance building up to "My knowledge is restricted to the Western Hemisphere". Strangely, there's not much in his autobiography about 'LOT7GV' which is unfathomable.
Julie Ege is the female lead, a Scandinavian buxom-vamp ... Read More

The Satanic Rites of Dracula
To tell you the truth, the only item I find interesting in "The Satanic Rites of Dracula", is the opening sequence, in which we hear some delightfully eerie music and the shodow of Chris Lee standing with his talons spread out wide and his cloak billowing in the wind. As the titles finish, the camera cuts in for a very tight shot and we see a naked girl lying on a dissecting table, with a Chinese lady standing over her with a Cockrel(held up-side down) ready for dissection. There are several(I think
seven)men-in-hoods and cloacks, standing all round with some sort of 'brahmin' marks on their foreheads. My mother Shobha Varma, (according to her own review) may have found the film fantastic, but I do not. In fact, I ask, what is Christopher Lee, the icon of Hammer Films' Vampire cult, doing as a business tycoon, living in a muti ... Read More

DVD : Rasputin, the Mad Monk
Whilst this isn't a classic a Hammer film by any means, it does make for strangely compelling viewing. The film was obviously made on a very small budget, and I suspect it was filmed soon after Dracula: Prince of Darkness as the cast is very similiar and some of the same sets look the same.

Rasputin is a drinker and womaniser who has healing powers. Using these he becomes the trusted Doctor to the Zsars wife. However his motives are suspect.. Christopher Lee plays the title role (based on a real historical person and in part true) and is the best and worst thing about the film. Without Lee's screen presence this simply wouldn't have worked. However in places I found his performance a little over the top (dare I say even a little hammy).

In the UK on region 2 this is available as part of "The Hammer Collection" boxed set of 21 films. If you're a fan of ... Read More
