I remember this film vividly because when I first saw it, it was at a cinema in Paris--and this was my first time in the City of Light!! Also I was on my 3 day leave from the Air Force and when I saw that famous scene when warden Strother Martin beat Luke (Newman) after he says, "Boss, why are you so nice to me?" to which Martin utters the famous lines, "What we have here is a failure--to communicate", it rang in my ears as an ironic twist to my days in Basic training. The late Paul Newman, who died just this last Friday, the 26 of September, lived and died like his character, Luke, in defiance but always smiling. His defiance was in what people had pegged him for--the handsome movie star with beautiful blue eyes with a classical face. Instead he channeled this defiance into helping other ... Read More

Paul Newman was a true classic. In the old days, leading men were like old cars: dependable. Paul Newman did a lot of films, but Cat on a Hot Tin Roof is a personal favorite of mine.

The movie opens at a wealthy plantation in Mississippi. There's a big celebration; Harvey "Big Daddy" Pollitt returns home to celebrate his 65th birthday. His son Brick (Paul Newman) is married to Margaret "Maggie the Cat" Pollitt (Elizabeth Taylor). Brick was once a college football star before he tore a leg muscle. Now, all he has are memories, a busted ankle, a drinking habit, and a crutch.

Big daddy (Burl Ives) is a big man with a ravenous appetite for food, pleasure, and fat cigars. He built up his wealth the hard way. Every scrap on his dinner table was raised on his land. He took ... Read More

I first saw this movie in black and white one summer when I was a teenager and I thought it was very steamy then. Now I'm a grandma and it's almost as steamy. I was a little disappointed the movie had been colorized...but Paul Newman is gorgeous!

WOW...just plain WOW. You get 3 of Paul Newman's greatest movies for this low low price. They are packaged in standard DVD cases just as if you were buying them separately in a store....except you are getting each for about 1/3 to 1/2 the price you would pay for them separately. Actually I think Paul Newman's performance is better in these 3 movies than in some of his pot-boilers like Cat On a Hot Tin Roof or The Long Hot Summer (where his performances seem stiff and over-acted). In the Hustler, Jackie Gleason proves he is as fine a dramatic actor as any of his time and has a true reason for his reported "swelled head". Although I still think Hud was Paul Newman's best-ever performance, you can't beat the price of this set if you are a Paul Newman collector.

"Hud" is one of Newman's greatest movies but, interestingly, I find his father, the old man, more compelling. Hud, as his old father notes, has his share of charm and even guts but he has no soul. He doesn't care. He doesn't care about people and lives only for himself. He uses others, especially women, but ultimately he is his own worst enemy and his reward is a emptiness.

Initially, Lonnie, his 17 y.o. nephew admires him and wants to be Hud's kind of man. Gradually, perhaps inevitably, the nephew learns all too much about Hud both from his grandfather and Hud's own selfish and reckless behavior. A cow dies. Hud wants to leave the carcass to the buzzards but his father, although he has much to lose, insists on a veterinary examination. The veterinarian suspects hoof-and-mouth, a disease that ... Excellent movie. It is a must see movie that was way ahead of its time. Although the movie is more than 65 years old, it has meaning today because it's about girlfriends. The all star cast includes Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford, Rosalind Russell and no men. What a hoot!

A movie that is just plain well-acted. The ensemble supports Mr. Gregory Peck as if his life depended on it. Mr. Brock Peters becomes more than the average mongrel can stand: an innocent man of a shade other than pink, and justice won't be served because of the mongrels. But criticizing this film would be like shooting a mockingbird, wouldn't it? This is another dumbed-down attempt at looking at the mongrel world from a bystander's perspective.

Mexican narcotics officer Mike Vargas (Charlton Heston) and his bride (Janet Leigh) have just ended their honeymoon in a border town when they become involved in a murder investigation. Also on the case is a veteran American cop (Orson Wells) who has a habit of winning convictions by planting evidence.

How much you like this movie depends on how much you like the film noir genre. This is a typical hard-bitten crime story filmed mostly at night or in deep shadows in shabby locations with terse dialogue and no-nonsense characters. Heston isn't convincing as a Mexican, but he's dynamic and sincere anyway. Janet Leigh had a broken arm for most of the filming and it's fun to see the ways the cast is hidden. As a star, Wells is bloated and repellant and the villain you love to hate; as the director, he's creative ... Read More

It starts like a horror movie, exemplified by dying Kane's melodramatic uttering of "Rosebud". It tells the story of Hearst-like character in flashbacks. His early successes ( the fact is that he was already rich to start with), marriage to a boring woman, his failure to win an election because of his devotion to his mistress and then I stopped watching, reminded me of those boring Lenin documentaries' that I watched as a kid in Soviet Russia - given that I had no choice and one Channel to reckon on with. Again you are fooled by stupid people who for reasons best known to them call a tabby cat ( Citizen Kane) a Lion ( any Satyajit Ray movie). Hearst was right to oppose this garbage, I would too, since it is so boring. It aint worth my two stars, but today I feel kind!!!
