After having known Scorsese's earlier work like "Last Waltz" and recently "No Direction Home - Bob Dylan", I expected "Shine a light" to be of a similar standard. But it's mostly damp squib with the entire movie being about just one concert (all songs shown are played fully) with very few titbits from backstage and fewer clips from Stones' earlier years. This is not a documentary on the Rolling Stones but rather an extended dvd of one concert. Nothing really stands out here. All in all very avoidable. Hugely disappointing as earlier works like "The Last Waltz" and "No Direction Home" are like collectibles that can be watched several times over the years with their timeless quality..."Shine a Light" is nowhere near that..one watch and you can toss it in the bin...oh well...

My son Joshua was a senior in high school on that fateful morning of
September 11th,2001.The next day he and his best friend went
to the local Army recruiter and enlisted.Like all Americans,he felt helpless in this terror-filled new universe we all woke up to
on the morning after.Nothing would ever be the same.Americans were
facing a "faceless" enemy;my son and thousands of young Americans like him, felt they had to "do something". In the spring of 2003,Josh
entered Iraq and would not come home until January 2004. America had finally put a face to our enemy;Saddam Hussein had to be taken down.
Mission accomplished...but was it the right mission?

As a fan of Pete Seeger for many years I was so happy to see his life shown with all the family information. Shows a person might not agree with you but still has a right to their own beliefs. A good person with the idea of helping all and living life to the fullest. Also shows that Toshi was the guiding light for the family and Pete. Without her, he would not be able to be the man he is today. His beliefs and songs have given us so much.

The reviewer who claims that this film was originally made in 4:3 format is quite wrong. Perhaps he means the original video, which was certainly cut to fit a standard TV. But this good DVD is correctly formatted, and nothing has been cut off from the top or bottom.

That having been said, this is a very comprehensive set. The 36' documentary with reminiscences of the film's crew is fun and enlightening. One comes away with the feeling, as if we couldn't guess from the film itself, that spirits were high (pardon the expression) and everyone felt this would be something special.

The remastering here is quite good, tho perhaps not quite Criterion quality. The sound seems just a bit flat, and is much fuller in the restored WS Help!

But, these tiny quibbles aside, ... Read More

Just another sign I was born in the wrong generation. To have been at this concert, wow, what a memory. Fantastic work by Martin Scorcese.

Of all the efforts put in bt Pink Floyd, this is the one essential Roger Waters compilation. This product is a journey into madness. It's about the alienation he feels between the band and the fans.

I like Bob Dylan's music somewhat, but I would be far from being a real fan. I also understand his general place in pop culture and the history of music. So I decided to watch this.

I am so happy I did, it is an incredible movie down by Scorsese. Many things I did not know (though fans may have already known) and it was put together beautifully.

An engaging look at the man and the legend surrounding him during a time I did not know much about.

Highly recommended for any music fan.
