One of cinema's greatest masters, Max Ophuls. A brilliant screenplay, equal parts romance, humor, cynicism and tragedy. Career performances from Darrieux, de Sica and Boyer. A film that's been a staple of all-time greatest movie lists since its initial release. The usual deluxe Criterion transfer and goodie-stuffed package (thanks, Criterion, for including the novella this movie's based on -- been trying to track it down for years!) For my money, the happiest DVD of the year. Essential.

The wonderful folks at Criterion have at last released Albert Lamorisse's beautiful, perfect film THE RED BALLOON on DVD! For years, this family classic has only been available in inferior VHS and less than legal DVD versions. None look as gorgeous or have been treated with such care as this Criterion release. The print has been scrubbed and polished until the Paris of 1956 is nothing short of magical. The Director's son Pascal and his best friend, a simple yet elegant red balloon, come to life as never before. At 34 minutes, it's exactly the length needed to tell the story, and, as always, perfect for children as a fable of love and devotion and triumph (don't we all just want to fly away?).

As to the transfer to DVD: full frame, digital, fabulous. Subtitles are included for the spare ... Read More

It was a happy day when I first heard Criterion was finally releasing Max Ophüls' two great films, La Ronde (1950) and Criterion Collection: Earrings of Madame De. Ophüls is known for his brilliant tracking shots and elaborate camera movements (which influenced Stanley Kubrick). He is also known for his black-and-white French bedroom farce, La Ronde (1950), starring Anton Walbrook, Simone Signoret, and Gérard Philipe, based on Arthur Schnitzler's controversial 1897 play, Reigen. (Adolf Hitler considered Schnitzler's play obscene for its depiction of the sexual morals and class ideology of its day. Schnitzler, a doctor, recognized that syphilis was not limited to certain layers of Viennese society.) La Ronde ("The Roundabout") follows a series of stories about love affairs that end with one of the partners ... Read More

The screen is pitch black and we hear a voice..."I'm so happy to be talking in the dark as if I were beside you, and maybe I am." The speaker is Guy de Maupassant (voiced by Jean Marais), and Le Plaisir is three of his stories filmed by the great director Max Ophuls. The connecting thread? That pleasure, or even love, lies in how people intermingle their lives, with a shrug, assumptions, an apology, a thank you. Le Plaisir is not so much a sophisticated film of attraction and hope as it is a film of rueful wisdom. It's best to keep in mind while watching this movie that while life can be enjoyed, there are times when hope can disappear.

The three stories consist of, first, La Masque. We are in 19th Century Paris at the Palais de la Dance, where great, swirling balls are held. This is a place where ... Read More

The pristine images, the hypnotic faces and that great score make for a sensational 50's noir that's as coolly fascinating as it is thoroughly entertaining. I simply can't image anyone not enjoying this movie.

Despite this movie's strong placement in the annals of those deemed "classics", I was a bit hesitant to check it out because I'm not the biggest fan of neorealism, and, strangely enough, a lot of my friends with opinions I respect really didn't like it. I've got to say that I'm going to have to side with those who call it a classic this time around. More specifically, I've never before seen a neorealist film I would ever have called "gripping" and I've not seen any neorealist film as good since "Roma, citta operta".

Let me quickly go through some of the myths and the more popular interpretations: it is true that the movie completely revolves around a man and his son searching for the man's stolen bicycle, but it is not true at all that there's nothing else to it. More specifically, it's about the man's relationship ... Read More

'The African Queen' is an acknowledged classic of the first order.

How does one review perfection in cinematography? How does one review superlative acting by the three main characters? I say three main actors because, of the 'extras', Robert Morley deserves mention for his excellent portrayal of the 'out of his depth' missionary.

Bogart and Hepburn have a film chemistry that film makers must have drooled over. They are magnificent together. When one considers that the two of them - confined, as they were, to a boat in the middle of nowhere - managed to produce a movie that grips the mind and keeps one on the edge of one's seat for the duration of the film, only 'boggles the mind'.

This film deserves every award it received along with the actors. It is, simply, a marvellous movie!

Le doulos = hat = police informant.

For Jean-Pierre Melville, this is a surprisingly fast-moving story based on the distrust between criminals, police and police informants. It turns into a fine whodunnit so it helps to keep you wits about you.

This is the second Jean-Paul Belmondo performance I've seen in a Melville films and they were both outstanding. He is more subdued in these films than is typical for Jean-Paul, yet he has more life and dimensions than Alain Delon who would become Melville's choice for later films. Lesser-known Serge Reggiani is equally splendid in the other major role of the film (he is the focus of the first half of the film).

This is a B&W film with 60s clothing styles for the women and 50s style for the men (trenchcoat and hats). Not as distinctive as the other films I've ... Read More
