Everything in this movie puts it above most black action films of the 70's. The fight scenes are very well choreographed(with some great slo-mo), The actors and dialog are damn good mostly with the police cheif, mommy, and Bill Mckinney(from deliverance) having the best lines. The drug pushers and pimps are not "super cool" here and get what's coming to them and jones has no sympathy for them either. The film's decent budget provides for some great widescreen photography, car chases, explosions, and bloody gun battles. Tamara Dobson impresses by getting her point accross without calling everyone a bitch or MFer throughout the whole movie(a real woman).

I have only this to say: The scene where Dolemite is hovering above the camera as he makes sweet love to YOU, the viewer... You can feel his manly prowess coming right through the TV! Blacktastic!

I picked this up because I've always admired Pam Grier. For many years, even now one of the sexiest, most stunning women in films. This has always been my fav of her early films. Now that I own it I like it even better. The image and sound quality of the DVD are top-notch. Not blurred and scratchy like many films from the old American International library. The twenty five year old Pam takes your breath away in every scene. A big surprise for me was the commentary from director Jack Hill who like many film makers of the 70s came under harsh criticism for making the so called blaxplotation movies.(the films were accused of negatively portraying afro-americans,and targeting black audiences when they were largely produced, directed and written by whites.) I know this film has been trashed by critics both black and white for its heavy content (i.e. stautory rape scene, and interracial sex scene), but this film was given an X rating. Melvin Van Peebles, who is highly regarded as the "Godfather of Modern Black Cinema" put everything he had on the line to get this film made, despite the Supreme Court, death threats. Bill Cosby even co-financed the film. Ten years ago, I purchased "Sweetback" on VHS, and I was completely, blown away by this controversial, yet revolutinary, independent Black film. Bottom Line: If it weren't for Melvin Van Peebles raising the bar in filmmaking, there would be no Spike Lee or John Singleton.

'Am I Black enough for you?' That was the question the Right, Righteous, Reverend, Deke O'Malley asked of the people. I saw this when I was 14, in 1971 and have never forgotten it. Calvin Lockhart, Raymond St. Jacques, Godfrey Cambridge and the Drop-Dead Gorgeous...Judy Pace, made me sit in the State Theater and watch this at least 4 times running...right on my brother...Right On!!! The cameo by Redd Foxx gave it a sense of legitimacy too, because as cool as he was, he was comfortable playing a junk man...didn't forget where he came from.

Now this movie is one baad muther-shut-your mouth! I thought this was an excellent movie that tried to portray the life of a private detective in the Harlem of the early 70's in a gritty and hence more realistic manner. As a result, this movie is certainly dated and unmistakenably of that time and place as witnessed by the lingo and slang used liberally throughout and yet I found it still very enjoyable to watch even today. This cat Shaft reminded me a lot of Humphrey Bogart's character in the "Maltese Falcon" which I also thoroughly enjoyed but one thing that this movie has which is lacking in that great film noir classic is an excellent score. Pam Grier, need I say more. I love this movie, she is a sister with attitude, savvy an sass. Full action as she cracks the heads of seedy criminals and dirty public servants. A must see!
