If there was a 6 star rating, I would give it that. I saw bits and pieces of this series, and decided to get the whole series. I live close to the Lincoln museum and library, and have a special interest in the Civil War. Ken Burns did a GREAT job of describing the causes and trials of the war. Would recommend it to anyone even remotely interested in this subject.

Being for warned about the sound was fine and not a problem, I managed it by turning up the volume. A good concise video going over causes and political actions taken before and during the war. It touches the war from all viewpoints. I highly recommend adding this documentary to your video library.

First let me say that I loved the historical account related by this series: the following of the Enterprise throughout its time at war, the interviews with the veterans that served aboard her, the CGI and actual footage presentation of the battles in which she engaged. It's a great idea for a series and I much anticipanted watching it.

However, I found the episodes difficult to watch due to the vast overuse of "attention grabbing" film techniques, such as periods of rapid jump cutting between short bits of film (bits of less than 1 second), which often included bits of what looked like transmission interference and those flashed numbers and letters you get when old-time films run out. Also, the longer duration shots were often polluted with overlays of moving navigational charts.

In the normal course of events former high level bureaucrats in American presidential administrations usually save their attempts at self-justification for high ticket published memoirs or congenial `softball' speaking tours and conferences. In short, they prefer to preach to the choir at retail prices. Apparently, former Kennedy and Johnson Administration Cold Warrior extraordinaire Secretary of War Robert Strange McNamara felt that such efforts were not enough and hence he had to go before the cameras in order to whitewash his role in the history of his times. Despite an apparent agreement with his interviewer not to cover certain subjects and be allowed to present his story his way it is always good to catch a view of how the other side operates. It ain't pretty.

Just when it seemed that documentaries about 9/11 and the Iraq war had played themselves out, along comes writer/director Charles Ferguson's devastating and insightful NO END IN SIGHT. Where FAHRENHEIT 9/11 had basically nailed the Bush cabal for lying about the reasons America went to war in Iraq, and many other documentaries skewered the news media for basically being in bed with the administration, Ferguson probes into what was and was NOT going on in Iraq before, during, and after the invasion; and if you think you've seen it all, NO END IN SIGHT shows that what you've really seen is the mere tip of the iceberg.

In the film, Ferguson gets to interview people who were actually there in the firestorm, like Jay Garner, Paul Hughes, Barbara Bodine, deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage, Seth Moulton, ... Read More

Dogfights, Season 2 is a great series!
The only problem I had is on disc 5. In the first episode on the disc (Supersonic); the historian, Barrett Tillman, is speaking near the end of the episode when it abruptly ends with him in mid-sentence!
I thought perhaps it was a defect in the one series that I had received so I sent for another set and it had the same flaw. I'm assuming every set has the same defect.
It is obviously an oversight in the original editing by The History Channel.

Possibly the best documentary about life on an aircraft carrier. I've been there, done that, and have the ball cap, and parts of Carrier took me back to when I was deployed on one. At the end, I wanted it to go on, it was that good. It should be required viewing for anyone contemplating joining the Navy, but it is not in any sense a recruiting film.

The History Channel outdid themselves with the French Revolution series. The series provides outstanding insights from scholars that are interwoven throughout helping to inform viewers of historically relevant events.

It would have been a real shame had the History Channel done a poor job on one of the most important periods in history. With that said, they clearly did justice to their name and reputation with this outstanding production.

I must say one early reviewer had much sympathy for Marie Antoinette. I can't say I share the same feelings in view of the lack of compassion Ms. Antoinette had towards starving, oppressed French people whom the Royalty hoarded flour from. Such a sympathetic view towards the royals is really a reason why our current culture of King George W. Bush needs to be revolted ... Read More

God Grew Tired Of Us gives us a sensitive, human portrayal of the incredible strife the people of southern Sudan endured as they fled northern Sudanese troops entering their villages and killing their people. The footage of the Sudanese conflict does not pull any punches--it is quite graphic and I was truly upset by the needless suffering so many countless people faced. The characters in the United Nations refugee camp are easy to empathize with; and the plot of the documentary unfolds at a good pace that held my interest every step of the way. This is an outstanding documentary about a very long war in Sudan that received not enough attention from the United States and other world powers.

The documentary starts off showing the footage of the conflict and then we soon zone into a United Nations refugee camp in Kenya. It ... Read More
