and a very pleasant surprise! I finally rented this...needind something that would make me smile or laugh...having recently watched many great..but sad and hearbreaking films. I had no expectations, but this is a good flick! I'm 35, but could still enjoy this teen flick...and it's appeal is so great...people of all ages can do the same. It's a flick that makes you feel good. You will laugh, you will swoon...you may shed a tear...but you get a happy ending. And Heath Ledger is adorable in this...he even serenades us! Very charming...he and Julia Styles light up the screen. No matter how old you are...you will be smiling and feeling good at the end of this flick!

Great classic and still good today. Just wish they could have improved the sound when they put it on DVD. Still worth it though. Thanks for the good price.

Paul Scofield gives a stellar performance as a man whose ethics and principles trump even his regard for his life. Mr. Scofield plays Thomas More, King Henry VIII's close friend and confidante. But when the King virtually begs Sir Thomas for his acquiescence to a divorce from Queen Katherine so that he may "legitimately" marry the coquettish Anne Boleyn, Sir Thomas, an ardent Catholic, refuses. Locked in the Tower of London and ultimately deprived even of books to read, Sir Thomas refuses to relent, ultimately paying for his principles with his life. Wendy Hiller, a brilliant stage actress is superb as Sir Thomas' wife, and it would be difficult to find a more convincing King Henry than Robert Shaw. For the collector, this movie is a must

I am a huge Shakespeare fan, and HAMLET is my favorite of the Bard's work. So, logically, as a Shakespeare buff and an English major, you would expect Branagh's HAMLET to be my favorite cinematic version of the tale. Well, you would be wrong: Franco Zefferelli's HAMLET starring Mel Gibson and Glenn Close is my favorite, not Branagh's, and I'll tell you why: Branagh may be an immensely talented director with ground-breaking visions for Shakespeare's work, but he is an over-the-top and dreadfully melodramatic actor whose performances on screen are absolutely terrible. On stage, his moody, sulking, emo and whiny Hamlet would work because stage acting requires a larger-than life performance because as an actor, you have to perform to the back balcony, but on film that sort of acting doesn't work - the two mediums ... How do I add anything to this movie? It is all there: the music, the dancing, the conflict, Natalie Wood, Russ Tamblyn, Rita Moreno.

"This story shall the good man teach his son; and Crispin Crispian shall ne'er go by, from this day to the ending of the world, but we in it shall be remembered. We few, we happy few, we band of brothers; for he to-day that sheds his blood with me shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile, this day shall gentle his condition; And gentlemen in England now-a-bed shall think themselves accurs'd they were not here, and hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks that fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day."

It seems pointless to add to the overwhelming supply of positive reviews for this film. But as Amazon.com requests it...

A review close to this one remarks that teachers should put down their books and show this movie to their students instead. I can not agree more. Please attend:

Nobody could say the storyline in Much Ado About Nothing is particularly clever. In fact, despite some very witty lyricism you would have to say this is one of Shakespeare's weakest plays. Having said that, this interpretation by Kenneth Branagh makes the most of the material. The comic characters are completely over-the-top (including Michael Keaton of Batman fame, and Ben Elton, creator of the Young Ones) and the more serious ones are given a slightly modern interpretation. The main plot which deals with the importance of virginity in a new bride, has a gently mocking modern treatment. The whole play is, as its name suggests, a storm in a teacup and Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thomson make the most of the sarcastic interplay available to them. Even the charming Denzel Washington manages not to stumble over his lines.

Imo, Seinfeld seasons 1 & 2 are the best. Here the characters are still searching for the right form, and it is not as unrealistic as the later seasons.

What is interesting about this portrayal of William Shakespeare is that the historical figure was actually descended from the Saxon Earls of Wessex (and potentially from the Saxon Kings). Shakespeare's mother was a de Arden, after all, and the heiress of the hereditary family estate called Kingsbury in Wessex. Hence, it is surely at least ironic that the movie has him competing with the now Norman "Lord Wessex", pitting his Saxon pedigree against a Norman rival of similar rank. I wonder if the writers of the screenplay comprehended the irony (and implausibility) in this fictional rendition?
