I bought this movie because it ia my favorite western, however after watching it without any problems, it will no longer play. It was handled with the utmost care, no scratches, didn't touch surface, next time I inserted it, just would not load. All of my other DVD's work fine.The Big Country

If there are any actors today that can fit into chaffs and cowboy boots, they would be Clint Eastwood & Robert Duvall. Duvall has stated in an interview that of all the roles he has played as a character actor, none fit him better than that of a cowboy. This film is in a sense a continuation of his roles from "Lonesome Dove" to "Open Range" in which he plays a seasoned cowboy who has to fight the bitter elements, human and natural, in order to get the job done. Duvall is ably supported here by Thomas Haden Church who in a break from his comedic roles, is excellent as his long estranged nephew who joins him on the cattle drive. Is this the best Western ever made? I tend to disagree with the other reviewers. There are an awful lot of good movies to consider, including Leone's own "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly." And of course "The Searchers", "High Noon", "Stagecoach", and "Unforgiven" all must be ranked as the possible number one. It's a pointless exercise, of course. This movie is very, very good. Many images are unforgettable and very moving: the shots of the train, the shootouts at the beginning and end of the film, Fonda's expressions, the shots of Monument Valley, the scene at the end showing the unstoppable progress of the railroad and the new town. Good movie with Robert Duvall and Kevin Costner, it has to be good. Quality and entertaining drama

This is the movie that made me fall in love with Westerns. I must have seen it over a dozen times, but I still enjoy it. It's easily forgotten that this was a mold-breaking movie in its day and it paved the way for Sergio Leone. Roy Rogers and Gene Autry could never gain membership in the Seven. For that matter, this club would probably reject every John Wayne character that preceded the film. (However, either J. B. Brooks or Rooster Cogburn could have made this the Magnificent Eight.) The Special Edition DVD includes a new making of documentary with some interesting insights into the chemistry that worked to make this ensemble movie great. Amazing how many people really liked this very poor excuse for a movie. But then again, we love to create gridlock to watch a grisly traffic accident on the Interstate, hoping to see blood and gore which is not our own. Dances With Wolves can be commended for one thing and one thing only: the people who produced, directed, and acted in this movie knew how to pander to the lowest common denominator. I have teenage children and I wouldn't want them to watch this movie; their time would be much better spent with The Simpsons or Family Guy.

This is probably my favorite Dustin Hoffman film. Although he is a great drama actor, he excels in comedy. He did this one masterfully.

This has always been one of my favorites westerns, although I never went to the trouble of getting a DVD version, until it came up on my Amazon recommendation list. I ordered it right away, and received the usual good Amazon service, and quick, free shipping, and have not been disappointed. Gregory Peck is one of best actors, and makes the movie, playing the bad guy this time, instead of his usual hero role. I can personally recommend this movie, going against a number of the negative reviews that are posted here.

my dad loved this when he got the movie, as this is his favorite john wayne western, and he loved the bonus material contained in the box.
