The voice dubbing on the film is horrific. It's like watching a bad karate movie. There mouths are moving, but the words don't come out until a few seconds later.

"You will now listen to my voice . . . On the count of ten you will be in Europa."

While perhaps best known for his Dogme 95 films Breaking the Waves (1996), The Idiots (Idioterne) (1998), and Dancer in the Dark (2000), Academy Award-nominated Danish film director, Lars von Trier, is also celebrated for his "Europe trilogy" of films: The Element of Crime (Forbrydelsens element) (1984), Epidemic (1987), and Europa (1991) (originally released as Zentropa in the U.S. to avoid marketing confusion with the film Europa Europa). Featuring an international ensemble cast including Jean-Marc Barr, Fassbinder protégés Barbara Sukowa (Berlin Alexanderplatz) and Udo Kier, expatriate American, Eddie Constantine, Max von Sydow and Ernst-Hugo Järegård, Europa tells the surreal story of an ... It is- just look at the rankings above. This movie is pretty much in the dictionary next to "art house cinema," for a certain population group, you saw it in college at the art house theater, for their children- watch the DVD. This movie is, compared to other Bergmann, a rolicking good time- so be ready to laugh- and despair.

Another good Criterion Collection edition- is there any other way to watch the classics of european cinema?

The movie was good and fairly entertaining, but it had technical glitches where it would stop and then start again.

Leo Tolstoy once opined that all happy families are happy in but a few ways, while those that are not suffer in many unique ways. This apothegm was never more well evinced than in filmmaker Ingmar Bergman's five hour 1973 Swedish telefilm Scenes From A Marriage (Scener ur ett aktenskap), a miniseries that was even more influential in Europe than the American television miniseries Roots, which captivated American audiences only a few years later. Bergman's miniseries was repackaged for foreign markets into a 169 minute film version that, in 1974, was almost universally lauded by critics in America. Although, because it started out as a tv show, it was ineligible for Oscar consideration in America, it did win the National Society Of Film Critics Award for Best Picture, and, in 1977, PBS aired the entire ... This Carl Dreyer box set is a terrific addition to any collection. "Day of Wrath" - which reminds me a little of the Salem witch trials - tells of Anne who is married to a much older man, church elder Absalon Pedersson. She suffers in her loveless marriage and is always under the censorious gaze of her mother-in-law. Enter stage right her young stepson and a spark (divine or evil?) is kindled. This film is filled with fire and brimstone as women condemned as witches are put to the stake. My favorite has become "Ordet" which is so life-affirming and the characters (especially the father) so likable that you long to watch it again as soon as the credits role. Harder for me to fully embrace is "Gertrud." Though an acknowledged classic, at least initially I have been put off by the title character's personality. She ... Read More

It is certainly fair to say that much of Igmar Bergman's work (The Seventh Seal, Fanny and Alexander) takes an experienced mind to fully appreciate. As elitist as I'm in danger of sounding for writing that, I do believe it, but I will also concede that I am by no means experienced enough in life to appreciate Wild Strawberries fully. It makes me wonder why a film like Wild Strawberries would be shown in film classes to budding and perhaps talented artists, but not unlike me, they are most likely novices at life. Dr. Isak Borg (Victor Sjöström) is not a novice. He knows what it is like to lose love and surrender to something less. He knows exactly what it is like to be lulled and deceived by life's trials. For so long he was dead in life and would become alive again during the process of his death. It is a bittersweet and profoundly ... Read More

Why Swedish filmmaker Ingmar Bergman's 1982 final `filmic film', Fanny & Alexander (Fanny Och Alexander), bears the appellation it does is a mystery- one of many in the film, since the first titular character, Fanny (Pernilla Allwin) is a third or fourth level supporting character at best, and in the three hour theatrical version of the film she is not even mentioned by name for nearly an hour into the film. The film really should be called Alexander & Fanny, or simply Alexander, since it most closely follows two years in the life of young, handsome, brown-haired Alexander Ekdahl (Bertil Guve)- the original `boy who sees dead people,' from 1907 to 1909. Better yet, it should really be called The Ekdahls, for it is that whole family that is central to the film, especially Fanny and Alexander's beautiful blond mother Emilie (Ewa Fröling ... Read More

This is not exactly a movie and not exactly a documentary, but a bit of each blended to create a unique film. You will see and hear a wonderful rendition of Mozart's The Magic Flute, sung in Swedish, as presented at the Royal Dramatic Theater in Stockholm, and you also get a glimpse of the audience and the backstage, and this contributes to the awe and delight. It is a Bergman masterpiece and so un-Bergman....no dark mood, except that which Mozart chose to include. If you like The Magic Flute and the movies, this is THE video you want to keep and watch over and over.
