The thing about Oldboy is that it leaves you thinking long after the credits. The next night after seeing it, I ended up dreaming I was trapped in a hotel room, with my hair growing out of control, with the exception being that there was no TV. It certainly makes you think how you would cope in that situation - the only situation similar to that would be prison. But at least in prison you get some luxuries.

The story is based around Oh Dae-Su, who is taken from the streets after a drunken night out, and held prisoner in a hotel-style room, with no way out and nothing but the TV for company. He keeps up with the events of the world through this, and also learns of his wife's death and his young daughter's subsequent adoption. When his hair needs cut, or his room needs cleaned, he's ... The story unfolded ever so slowly and towards the end it became confusing. It's just a messed up story.

This is the third film in the vengeance trilogy and the best for my money. It is visually stunning and also gritty. Revenge has never been so artistic and beatiful while being painful and dark. I won't spoil it for any future watchers, but I will say that that the story is gripping and you won't be able to look away. enjoy

The movie itself is a dark gem, and others here have covered its merits--I'll say no more about its quality. But what were the folks at Tartan thinking when they literally created, out of very thin air, the subtitles for the Korean-language director's commentary?

The first half of the commentary (an interesting chat between director Park and another K film director, Ryu Seungwan) was reasonably well-translated. But there was no effort to translate the second half of the commentary; the subtitles were almost pure gibberish. While Park and Ryu went on to discuss aspects of dark humor and Bae Duna's acting and alluded to Kitano Takeshi, the subtitles went off in a completely different direction: childish, unenlightening comments on obvious plot points or scene settings. Examples of Tartan's creative writing: ... Read More

True horror is watching an over-hyped Japanese horror film that has as its hideous monster a six-year-old Japanese boy with his face caked in white make-up, mascara and his big moment to scare comes when he bulges his eyes and goes: "Ssssssssss!" Wow, I had a heart attack and had to rush to the emergency room for a heart transplant.

One grows bored quick when it seems that every recent japanese horror film always has ghost children and they all have the same make-up person who thinks that by caking their face with white powder and using a pound of black mascara then that's really going to terrify a a horror addict in the year 2008 whose used to CGI monsters or at least fiends done on a brilliant level--like those hooded ghouls in the terrific THE STRANGERS that I saw last week.

This is a uniquely Japanese horror movie, with little in the way of gore or jump-out-of-your seat thrills. Instead it slides inexorably into a vision of an apocalyptic world arising not out of atom bombs but alienation. Its perspective is fundamentally existentialist; all but a few of the characters talk about loneliness, how no one can ever be connected to anyone else, the essential isolation of being human -- even after death. This is a starkly horrifying concept in the context of Japanese culture, but might not translate as effectively into horror for American viewers (since we all think we're unconnected individuals already!). Like one of the earlier reviewers, I don't recommend it for neophytes to Japanese horror because the story does seem disconnected -- although it makes sense at the end, there's a lot for your own mind ... ***1/2 1998. Directed by Hideo Nakata, RINGU is an adaptation of Kôji Suzuki's Ring. Here's the movie that began the whole Ring serie, Japanese and American. An urban legend turns out to be true when the niece of a journalist dies of terror seven days after having seen a strange video tape. With simple special effects and no blood, Hideo Nakata manages to create a disturbing atmosphere. Recommended.

In addition to the TOMIE movies being a translation of a comic book character into film they also offer up mildly interesting reflections on contemporary Japanese life which involve teenage angst, the dating game, parent-child relationships and respecting one's elders.

Of course the main mystery which pervades everything is 'TOMIE'. Part ghost, part demon, these movies present the viewer with a variety of impressions and revelations into her (or IT's) purpose, nature, powers, and genesis. Who or what exactly is TOMIE?

This is all part of the deranged charm featured in this 'TOMIE Collection'. With 5 movies and over 7 hours exploring the same theme (and basically the same movie), there is the obvious claim of repetition and redundancy to be made.
Yet each movie tells the "story" slightly askance, offering up ... Read More

Everyone has his or her own "horror threshold": what's frightening to you might not be to me, and vice versa. Well, I can't say that Dark Water was particularly scary. The set up was slow to the point of being tedious and the payoff, although not without some tension and creepiness, was ultimately disappointing. There was nothing here that was unique, or innovative; in fact, it seemed pretty predictable. The only thing that came close to racing wasn't my heart but my finger toward the fast-forward button.

Most of this movie was, if not true to the manga, at least close enough to satisfy considering the crossover from book to movie. However, they cut out some important parts, parts that completely defined certain characters.

***Spoilers for book/movie***

One such example is Mitsuru, a guy who is constantly jumping out and surprising the main character. The chapter he appears in in the book is called Jack in the Box, and appropriately enough, he becomes one when he is killed by a car and the spring in it entangles itself in his body. He then jumps after Kirie, stalking her even in death. In the movie, he jumps out at her, dies in the right way and... that is it. No jack-in-the-box, not even the spring, no uzumaki (spiral) related death/horror what-so-ever.

Another is the very image on the cover- ... Read More
