I've just seen this film at the cinema and I enjoyed it very much. I wouldn't say it was fantastic, but it certainly wasn't useless either - somewhere in the middle. If you have enjoyed films such as 'The Truth About Being Earnest', you'll love this. Full of romance, comedy, and drama. You'll be laughing one minute, and feel like crying the next.

Set in 1940's Britain fastly approaching war, it follows the story of Miss Pettigrew, a middle age governess who once again has unfairly been sacked from her job. Unemployed and penniless she decides there is no other option but to seize the day, and finds herself working as social secretary to an aspiring young actress known as Delysia Lafosse. Well outside her comfort zone Miss Pettigrew is catapulted into the glamorous and social world ... Read More

This movie is one of the better movies I have seen. My wife and I sat and watched this and commented that this was a very realistic scenario and acting was right on. It is good to see Ryan in a role that is more the type of character he should play, even though is good in everything. Isla Fisher never looked hotter! The plot kept me thinking the whole time.

If you are an "Under The Tuscan Sun" fan you'll want to add this one to your chick flick collection. It gets better and better with each viewing (great to watch in bed, especially if you are an insomniac). Nancy Meyers is just a genius at adding the perfect complimentary music to her films. There's an atmosphere to the whole thing. If only to watch the brilliant, BRILLIANT Kate Winslet act, you should get it. First time I saw the movie I thought Diaz was a little broad but the more I watch it the more I am impressed by her and appreciate her comedic talents. Jude Law, yummy. Not sure why Meyers cast Jack Black, but he delivers. This DVD is a no brainer to buy if you have even the slightest hint of a romantic bone in your body.

I really like this movie, because it's realistic and funny and sweet and just gives you butterflies. Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger were great in this film. My favorite scene was the paintball one, it was so cute and romantic. I would recommend this movie to anyone and everyone.

RIP Heath!

Well, sorry to throw a monkey wrench into the praise party for the '62 film `The Music Man' but I have to be honest and say this is definitely not one of my favorite musicals. Yes there are moments of brilliance here; Robert Preston is magnificent as Professor Harold Hill and Shirley Jones is indeed lovely and sings beautifully, but I have decided to face the wrath of its legion of adoring fans and relate some of the reasons why this film bothers me.

The single most important aspect of a musical is the music itself and it is here that in my estimation the production fails. With the exception of the beautiful `Til There Was You' and the clever `Marian the Librarian' I don't find any of the other numbers are either noteworthy or memorable. In fact I find a number of them to be quite annoying such ... Read More

Roman Holiday -
Audrey Hepburn, a young stressed princess, experiences life without schedules and guards when she sneaks outside her country's embassy in Rome after being given sleeping medication. Gregory Peck, a poor newspaper reporter trying to earn enough money to get back to NY, thinks she is drunk and doesn't want her to be picked up by the police.

Thereafter follow several comedic scenes. He follows her around to get a real inside scoop on the life of a princess... His friend (Eddie Albert)brings a hidden camera. They tour several famous places in Rome, ending up back where she started in the shadow of the embassy on a boat and suddenly surrounded by several secret service agents from her own country. They end up falling in love and hence the interesting ending when she discovers ... Read More

This one has worked for me many times. I always keep a few musicals on hand to help me catch up on sleep.

In this production things like an over 13 minute "dance number" makes it especially valuable soporifically. Sometimes pretentiously referred to as a "Broadway Ballet" (or something of the kind) it consists, as far as I can see, of a lot of people in loud costumes prancing around and Gene Kelly intoning "Gotta Dance" repeatedly. Great stuff to induce some needed Z's.

On an even more positive note, Singin' In The Rain is a good song; it had been around for a long time when this movie made it deservedly popular. Jean Hagen does a good job, and O'Connor is energetic, but none of this is alarming enough to keep me awake for very long and disturb very pleasant slumber.

This film adaptation of Northanger Abbey has been a long time coming for any true Janeite. It was absolutely dripping with the very charm and wit of Miss Austen herself, and maintained the integrity of the text. A dash of British humour, a gleam of gothic fright, and a full cup of the endearing romance from the Regency Era.

Cheers!
