At long last on DVD!! I recorded this series on vhs when it was being televised. It was a labor of love and I'm so excited that finally it is becoming available on DVD. This is HOW THE WEST WAS WON on steroids. It features an all star cast and follows the town of Centennial, Colorado from conception to present day. If you like the Michener historical novels, you will love this presentation. It has great detail and interesting twists to keep you on the edge of your seat...

Why would anyone spend this amount of money to be left hanging at the end because it was never completed? This is like a book with the last several pages missing. HBO never aired the fourth season, and never ended the story line. I can't believe they had the guts to market this incomplete series, and at such a premium price. I enjoyed the original shows, but wouldn't have wasted my time had I known it would never have a closing.

My viewing was spoilt by the DVD going into annoying segments of blank video with the audio running. Several false starts and disc cleaning later, I managed to see the movie. Amazon needs to check on the rest of the DVDs in its stock if only spare any one else buying it now.

Interesting movie; unusual western which keeps up the pace even if it comes near the point of getting bogged down. In the end, a satisfying movie. Masterful performance by Crowe and Bale.

Be sure you have plenty of time to view this series. Like photo chips, when you view an episode can't wait for the next one. Sad the series has ended.

Anthony Mann's marvelous noir Western gets the usual deluxe Criterion treatment here, with a flawless transfer, excellent commentary from Mann scholar Jim Kitses, and the icing on this package's cake, a reprint of the hard-to-find Niven Busch novel that serves as the film's basis. Like Busch's other Freud-on-the-range epic, DUEL IN THE SUN, THE FURIES hardly lacks traditional action set pieces, but places its emphasis on the tortured pscyhes and twisted relationships of its main characters. Stanwyck's perhaps a bit long in the tooth for the story's Electra figure, but her performance is full-blooded and richly enjoyable. She's a fine match for Walter Huston's inspired scenery chewing as patriarch T.C. Jeffords. Wendell Corey, the lacklustre romantic lead, was in the middle of proving to producer Hal Wallis why ... So many people seem to have an ignorant, dismissive opinion of this show based on the language. Yes, it does take a little while to tune into, but you might want to consider doing a little homework before you shoot your mouth off about it being dumb, trivial, or especially "unrealistic".

Milch painstakingly researched the history of the period and the kind of language used, and in fact a large part of the show's project is about how the use of such language fits into a scenario where people are trying to establish order and civilization in a brutal, wild area. The amount of swearing in gold rush areas like Deadwood was huge and there were many reasons for it. One of the big ones is that the same words could be used in a variety of contexts to convey emotion and intention without having to reveal ... Read More

I haven't read the book, but I bought this on the strength of other reviewers. And what a disappointment. I'm a big fan of westerns, going back to the Lone Ranger - and that's pretty much what this goes back to. Plotwise, it's episodic and simplistic, full of cornball events and ridiculous coincidences. The direction is boring and basic, the photography and scenery repetitious and forgetable. Everyone keeps running into everyone else on the trail to Montana, with dramatic timing that makes the whole yarn laughable. Apart from Duvall, who's superb, the characters are thin and cliched, no more than flesh and blood cartoons. By halfway through the second episode, I couldn't care less, and after Angelica Houston made her miscast entrance, the whole thing became unbearably sentimental, sluggish and silly. This is not an epic masterpiece ... Read More

I agree with previous posters that Walker is great. Walker and Trivette are greatest team since Tonto and Lone Ranger. Trivette is awesome. Watching episodes of Walker Texas Ranger with my (now) 16 year old sons is a high point of family TV enjoyement. Good does triumph over Evil. Crime does not pay. However I must disagree with the lady who said there is never any sex in Walker. There are not a few scenes inside of strip clubs with scantily clad young women swinging on poles, etc. Some seasons more so than others I guess... but you need to have the remote close by to zip though some scenes every now and then.

If you don't like this movie, then you are probably not a movie lover. However, if you are someone who appreciates all the composite details of a movie such as the richness of the dialog, the choice of cast, the cinematography and the musical score then this film will stay with you for some time.

The way this beautiful film moves along makes it a haunting masterpiece. It also reinforces that in our overload of entertainment options such brilliant objects can easily be lost in the mud since it only took in $4 million at the box office. Regardless, everyone involved in this shoot knows that they were part of a memorable and wonderful piece of art.
