This movie terrorized me as a child of eight. In fact, it terrorized me so much that I watched it five times as it played at the local theater of my small town. I screamed my little head off--even when there was nothing to really scream about. It is a great horror film in black and white and only the BLOOD is in red--what a technical feat in 1957-1958! It had already played in the larger cities and those of us in small bergs had to wait and wait and wait and wait and wait and wait for it to get to our town. Ms. Crawford turns in a rather eccentric performance as Lucy Harbin in a movie made during the downward arc of her career. The movie opens with the axe murder of Lucy's philandering husband (played by a very young Lee Majors)and his lover. After spending around twenty years in an asylum for the criminally insane, Lucy is released and moves in with her brother and his wife at their farm. Lucy is also reunited with her daughter, played by Diane Baker, whom she hasn't seen since the double homicide. I remember when I was too young to see this movie when it was first released and how an older (by 2 yrs.) boy in the neighborhood was telling everyone that this was the scariest movie ever made and how skeletons came out of the movie itself and attacked the audience!!! I wasn't too sure that I wanted to see HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL just quite then...However, I will always think of this film as being very frightening! Watching it again the other day I'm amazed at how really well-made it is and how well it still holds up. Price is just priceless and the acting is fine all around. They say remakes are horrible, and "they" are usually right. The poster child for unnecessary Hollywood remaking is "House on Haunted Hill," remade from a Vincent Price cult hit of the same name. In the case of the "House on Haunted Hill" two-pack, viewers can see a prime example. Whatever else his failings as an accomplished filmmaker, William Castle sure as heck knew how to scare undemanding young movie-goers with his slew of Grade B horror pix of the late Fifties-mid Sixties. Unfortunately he's unable to scare up a single laugh with this tedious "comedy" about a schlub who spends lots of time in cemetaries and mortuaries looking for corpse buried with a big wad of mob money. Kids (Castle's main audience) will be bored stiff and most adults wisely won't go near it.
