"Gone with the Wind" is a fabulous film, the film by which all others are gauged. It debuted in 1939, perhaps the year that produced the most high quality films of all time. Watching this film is like viewing a great painting. Every time I watch it I get something new. I also detect subtleties and insights I never recognized when I was younger.

I won't attempt to summarize this well-known film, because I see that there have been over seven hundred reviews before this one. I will tell you about a personal experience that some reviewers might find interesting.

Many years ago when I was a medical student, I spent three months as an observer on a psychiatric ward containing patients with mixed diagnoses. One of the patients was an inconspicuous old lady diagnosed ... Read More

I teach English 1 to high school freshman. After letting three classes view both the 1932 and the 1941 version, the kids overwelmingly agreed the 1932 version was better. They couldn't really see a difference in appearance between Jekyll and Hyde in the 1941 version. And, being able to really see when the doctor was Jekyll and when he was Hyde helped them "get" the story better. The 1941 version also moves a bit more slowly.
There is also a Bugs Bunny short "Hyde and Hare" that my kids really enjoyed. It was a nice 5 minute recap of the story for them. Of course, it was also important to point out that though both movies had an Ivy character, the book did not...

slightly offensive. It's not entirely fair to hold a movie made in 1937 to our standards, but MGM could have showed some courage had they employed Chinese actors for Chinese parts. It's the same type of subtle racism of the day when native Americans in movies were played by whites. It is disrespectful at least. That said the photgraphy is awesome. There's just something about a locust plague in black & white. An excellant but definite fictional Hollywood movie. The life of a peasant farmer Wang Lang. Paul Muni did as well as anyone could have. Nothing special there.
His marriage to slave O-Lan is the best argument for arranged marriage I ever seen. Luise Rainer was a bit underwhelming. Their life is followed from poverty, sucess, starvation, wealth, moral weakness (his) & ... Read More

This is a by far the best version of Treasure Island on film. The acting, story and direction are superlative! This was a period of time when MGM and the other motion picture giants were trying to get used to the Hayes Code and get the censors off their backs. The censors were leading a call to boycott movies due to their lack of morality. MGM set about calming the situation down by making a series of expensive, wonderful films from the classics. The Hayes Code couldn't complain about that and how could they lead a boycott of the Classics? It worked, not only by calming the situation down, but by providing people with some of the greatest films of all time. Treasure Island is a wonderful film. It has adventure, pirates and excitement. John Barrymore gets to act in two bit parts to show off his ... Read More
