In this case, old is definitely better! I had seen this movie several times on TV, but had missed scenes that had been cut for commercials (i.e., fashion show in color, while the rest of the movie was in b&w). Although the new version of this movie is up-to-date in its views of women, the original was definitely more "catty." Also, the new version missed out on the triumphant face-to-face scene between the wife and the other woman at the end of the original. Finally, the scene in the new version, with Meg Ryan's character eating the stick of butter, contained a line that simply ruined the movie. I say that because the message of a woman being able to survive without a man was lost with that one line and no mother (Meg) would want her daughter to think that's what it takes to "keep" a man...

I like this as a classic musical. The songs fit well with the dialogue and story. The costumes are incredible. This has always been a favorite remake of Pygmalion set to music.

Perhaps not my favorite classic, but The Philadelphia Story is a great adaptation of the play with some of the greatest actors of their day. Now I am only twenty so this was out far before my years, but it certainly kept my attention and will sit high in my list of favorite films. Macaulay Connor(James Stewart) stumbling around with Tracy Lord(Katharine Hepburn) drunk on champagne, and previously meeting with C.K. Dexter Haven(Cary Grant) in my mere opinion is oscar worthy in itself. "Gone with the Wind" is a fabulous film, the film by which all others are gauged. It debuted in 1939, perhaps the year that produced the most high quality films of all time. Watching this film is like viewing a great painting. Every time I watch it I get something new. I also detect subtleties and insights I never recognized when I was younger. I found this box set for under $20.00, which is a bargain for 5 films of this quality. I never saw many of Mr. Grants films when I was growing up, but I do like films from all genres, so I figured I'd give this box set a chance. My parents are up for a visit and since they grew up with these pictures, I thought this would be the time to watch them. I was able to get the perspective of people familiar with them and from people who weren't. I will review each film as I watch them and add the rating to this review and review the films on their individual releases. 1) Holiday - 3 stars 2) His Girl Friday - 4 1/2 stars 3) The Talk Of The Town - 3 1/2 stars 4) Only Angels Have Wings - 4 stars 5) The Awful Truth - 4 stars

Excelente película. Brillantes actuaciones de Boyer, Bergman, Lansbury, Cotten y Whitty. Bergman ganó un merecido Oscar a mejor actriz, pero la actuación de Boyer es sencillamente sobresaliente; encarna con maestría a un villano doméstico pero peligroso, dominante pero atribulado, calculador y arriesgado, a la vez. Una expresión realista de la mezquindad humana. El DVD contiene la versión original y también excelente de 1940. Efraín.

I'm sure in it's time this was a very good movie, but for me it took forever to get to the inevitable. The film is saved by good performances by Grant and Hepburn, but it's not enough to save this slow moving predictable romance movie. It's easy to love the idea that the young Grant has, of earning enough money to let him take some time off to see what he wants to do with his life as I have always tried to live my life in the same manner. Maybe I've seen so many films that this one just doesn't stand out? I viewed this movie which was included in a box set with four other Grant pictures, I can only hope I enjoy the other more than this one, but the DVD transfer is very good and there are some interesting extras, so if your a fan look for the Cary Grant Box set.

My mother used to talk about this movie when I was younger, and how she loved it. I finally found it on Amazon, purchased it, and invited her to watch with me. It has the look and feel of the old war (the Big One)with a slightly different twist--Ginger Rogers is a murderer on Christmas furlough. Shirley Temple is classic Shirley--neither impressive nor instrumental to the plot--as the teenaged daughter of Ginger's relatives. Joseph Cotten, suffering from battle fatigue, predictably falls for Ginger, rescuing her from a vicious dog and relying on her image to pull him through a perspiration-packed relapse. "I'll Be Seeing You" comes off more as a made-for-television movie, but because the people in the movie are major stars, they brighten the screen more than the lackluster plot could ever do.
