Very, very good and a bit sad. And most frighteningly there is a scene early on in the movie that shows show Jack Lemmon working in an insurance company in a sea of desk. I would say "pre-cubicle days" but it was nearly duplicated at an insurance company in New York in real life around 1989. Had I seen the movie beforehand I would not have been able to work there without giggleing every time I entered that gigantic room.

Fred MacMurray was wonderful, and in this movie I can really see what people saw in Shirley MacLaine. And it really started me off on watching more movies by Billy Wilder. Which are adult films in the right sense of the word. If you are 16, the odds really are that you are just going to "get it". There are things to laugh at, but the horror aspect of it ... Read More

I read your reviews of P&B productions and settled on this one because of a glowing report by someone. I was very disappointed. First, it was at least 30 minutes too long. It could easily have been an hour shorter with nothing important left out. Good photography and sound, good singing and acting for the most part, but "Summertime" was far too slow in tempo. Maddeningly slow. George would never have allowed that. But the worst was the ending, with Porgy suddenly able to walk, just like Amahl! How corny can you get??? What made the producers think they could improve the story? And why a cane instead of a wheeled cart? What makes modern fools think they can improve on a classic? A fatal delusion. I'll have to keep looking for a better production. Any suggestions?

As wonderful a production of Othello as there can be found. Plus, it's shot as a stage production which gives it leverage as an educational tool.

What a strange array of reviews on this amazing little opera. Those who did not like it must have a screw loose. I have watched it at least 5 times since I bought it and shared it with all I know. The music is outstanding, and the lyrics bring tears to your eyes, especially in the scene with the Fox. My favorite vocal and character performances are the Pilot, the Little Prince, the Fox, and the Lamplighter. I do not believe anyone could come up with music and lyrics that more accurately capture the intent of the book. All life's lessons are included. I fully expect Tim Burton to attempt his movie version of this, as it is a perfect vehicle for his imagination and particularly his production talents. This was clearly a stage production put to film, so don't be hard on the lack of special effects ... Read More

I'm going to be brief, and not say what I really feel about the staging of this production. After reading several reviews, it's quite obvious that many people have a great appreciation for this modern, minimalist style of production. In the end, that depends entirely on the viewer's tastes. I will say that I can not see it as an appropriate aesthetic match to the style and beauty of Berlioz' music. There are certain genres of music that work very well with bizarre, stark, cumbersome staging. Most of them date from or after the late romantic period (i.e. late 1800s), when extreme freedom of musical form was able to complement similar freedom in visual form. Wagner's Ring Cycle, Berg's and Janacek's operas, Puccini's Turandot are a few examples that come to mind.

Take most baroque, classical, ... Read More

I enjoyed very much this version of Prokofiev's "L'Amour des Trois Oranges". In general is a very fresh and imaginative put in scene of a work that was written in the times of the "Commedia del Arte" by Carlo Gozzi.
The presentation of the classical personages of the "Commedia del Arte" such as the "polichinella", "prince", "dottore" among others, with a funny new approach of garderobe is a smart feature. Some of the dynamics on the stage are inspired in the classical greek theater (a very participative Chorus), with many other modern and ingenious resources.
Everything fits with great accuracy within the music opera of Prokofiev like an amazing and clever clockwork.

Watching this movie made me relive the King-Riggs tournament like it was yesterday. Every detail was period perfect, and the movie matched the exact tone of wit that surrounded that spectacle (or should I say 'circus'?). In fact, this movie gave a lot more depth to it. Those of us who lived through that spectacle only saw the 'pig' side of Riggs, which he played up for all it was worth (a hell of a lot in terms of money!). This film shows the sweet side of the guy, and the fact that he just wanted to feel like he could still compete at his age. I actually felt as much sadness for him when he lost, as I felt extreme joy when Billie won. I have to give director Jane Anderson a lot of credit because she didn't play up that final shot into the net that lost the match for Bobby. I was watching this with three other people ... Read More

I was amazed to find that there could be an edition of the Magic Flute that I simply wanted to turn off - and a Glyndebourne Opera edition, at that! I had bought it with high hopes at our local Stockholm music-shop - it was on sale, and now I think I understand why. The acting, especially Pamino's, is extraordinarily wooden - it is like seeing a high-school performer stumbling through his lines. Goeke's lack of schooling in how to pronounce German does not help, either - I have seldom had to actually cringe at how a recitative is pronounced. The sets, also, are inappropriate, overdone and silly-looking. Luxon tries to save the production by producing a wonderful, older, buffoon-like Papageno, but he is stranded amidst the other inadequate actors. And, finally, the orchestration is not to be recommended for those who tend to ... Read More
