This film has become a cult film with time. Everything seems to be at that level though the situation and plot are rather light. What is important here is that Hitchcock transforms this back yard and garden surrounded by buildings all around and a highly voyeuristic microcosm into a complete vision of human society with all its dramas, and its pleasures and joys. To transform such a small microcosm entirely closed onto itself into a vision of the whole society we hardly get a couple of glimpses of through an alley opening onto the main street is marvelous and amazing. The second phenomenal fact is that the main actor is a wheelchair-ridden man with a severely broken leg in a cast. How can the whole world completely turn and whirl around that sole man? It is only possible because it is absolutely ... Read More

This film is for the Criterion Collection DVD edition of the film.

The Furies, directed by Anthony Mann and starring Barbara Stanwyck and Wakter Huston, is one of the best films I have seen for a while.

It is about a greedy widower and his daughter who live on a ranch called "The Furies" in New Mexico in the 19th century. The daughter is in love with a squatter on the ranch and when the father kills him, she exacts revenge.

I really liked the film and thought it was very well made.

It includes some fine special features including the complete novel the film is based on. Also included is a theatrical trailer, audio commentary by historian Jim Kitses, a 1967 interview with Anthony Mann, a 1931 interview with Walter Huston, a new interview with Anthony Mann's daughter, ... Leona (Barbara Stanwyck) is a rich invalid who is driving her husband (Burt Lancaster) crazy with her attempts to keep him dependent on her financially. When one night he doesn't come home, Leona attempts to call him. Picking up the receiver, she discovers the line in use. A moment of unintentional eavesdropping reveals a murder plot that Leona is helpless to prevent.

For her performance, Stanwyck earned an Oscar nomination. The film is exquisitely directed by Anatole Litvak (the philandering husband of Miriam Hopkins). This is a classic example of film noir and the perfect date night movie. "Sorry....wrong numba..."

A great classic movie from the 1950s, this Lancaster and Hepburn film is bound to have you glued to your seat. The sexual tension between Hepburn and Lancaster is remarkable and the all male environment that Hepburn lives in only adds to this. Couple this with Lancaster's sleazy take on being a "rainmaker" and you've got the makings of a great book, play, movie, and musical. Rain-make your way into this great film.

There have been several movies released under the title of "Holiday Affair". Since Amazon has not listed the stars of this movie I can assume (hopefully) that this is the 1949 version starring Robert Mitchum and Janet Leigh with Wendell Cory as the boyfriend. If it is then this is a 9 out of 10 star movie and I highly recommend it as a Christmas movie.
Mitchum has been discharged from the Army after serving in WW2. He takes a job as a toy salesman in a department store to raise enough money for train fare to Calif. where he plans to build boats. He meets Leigh who is employed as a comparison shopper for another store. She has a son about 6 years old and is engaged to Wendell Cory. Problems arise and Mitchum is fired from his job. Without giving away the complete plot, the gist of the story is.... does she want to stay in New York ... Read More

Ok, ok, I know, this movie is campy. And ok, I know, I know -- this movie is "over the top." But, still, it's a damn good movie.

Serious, well-acted and based on the work of Clifford Odets (not exaclty a slouch when it comes to writing and creating chartacters), this movie deserves a wide audience.

Note to any would-be Rich Little-wannabee ... This is the movie to see to get down pat the definitive Rod Steiger impersonation. ("Ho-ho ho-ho! If you don't start reacting out there, I'm gonna machine gun everyone of you. And-I'm-not-kidding. Oh-yes-I-am-kidding!")

Any movie that's a *serious* movie, has to be taken seriously, has to be respected. And this movie, with all its flaws, is a SERIOUS movie.

The production values are not great. The direction is choppy. The style is, as ... Read More

8.Loving You starring: Elvis Presley, Lizabeth Scott, Wendell Corey, Dolores Hart, James Gleason

DVD : Loving You
Presley's second film has never looked or sounded better than on this Maple dvd release. Nothing to complain about, really, except for the strangest bonus features I've ever come across. Brief chats with NBC-Tv personalities, not a one of whom had anything to do with Elvis. The comments from people like Jay Leno and others are absolutely useless, bewildering and shallow. Only Martin Sheen (!) manages to say, well, anything, and after it's over you find he spent six minutes or so expounding on basically one 20-second thought. At least he realizes it.
Hmmm. Maybe we should do this with all musical dvd's, interview celebrities who have nothing to do with the films. I would love to hear what, say, Park Overall thinks about "Head". The movie, that is.

astro zobies...sounds like a more promising plan 9 from outer space. it's not much better actually. my buddy nabbed this dvd used for real cheap and we had a good time trashing it. probably not something i'd wanna see again though. i remember alot of the movie being padded out. one grueling scene had some chick looking around terrified in a shoddy lab room for what felt like an hour! just form the openning credits you know you're in trouble. i'm still not sure if the marching wind-up toy robots were supposed to be actuall robots or not.
worth a look for bad movie buffs
